"Wow just wow. What else can I say? Ra was just wonderful from the 1st meeting and soo thorough! Was so accommodating even when we added in a cultural dance and music. She organised everything with the performers. Prior to the event she dedicated her time to organise three zoom meetings to ensure our reception was perfect. Ra was calm throughout the whole process and we would recommend her highly for any event. A big thank you for adding that extra bit to our wonderful day. "

Why book a wedding DJ through Airtasker?

Looking to throw a wedding reception that everyone will be talking about for years? Sounds like you need a top-notch wedding DJ! Someone who’ll keep the party going, wow the crowd, and, yes, fit into your budget. And with Airtasker, you can find someone who fits the bill (and is available on your big day!) in just a few minutes.

First, tap the “Post a task” button. Fill out the task post, indicating your wedding date and venue, your budget, and any special requests. This way, you get to filter out anyone who isn’t available with just one post, instead of asking around only to find out that the first 10 DJs you requested can’t accommodate you. You also get to filter out DJs who’ll make you go over budget. Once you’re done with the task post, tap “Get quotes.”

After a few minutes, you’ll see offers from available Taskers. You can now compare their offers, read their reviews & ratings, and pick the one you like best. And just like that, you’ve got a wedding DJ!

Top Wedding DJ related questions

What questions should I ask a DJ?

When hiring a wedding DJ, you need to know more than just their schedule. Some things to ask the Tasker include:

  • How long have they been in the business?
  • What equipment will they use, and will they provide everything?
  • What’s the backup plan in case their equipment or speakers don’t work?
  • Can you provide your own playlist and a “do not” playlist?
  • Can they take requests?
  • Do they take breaks, and what happens during this time?

What does your wedding DJ need to know?

First off, your wedding DJ should know whether they need to MC your reception. Next, they should know how to pronounce your names. The Tasker should know what songs or artists to avoid and if they should take requests. The DJ will also appreciate being informed of how you want the night to end - on an upbeat note or with a sweet, romantic song.

What songs should you not play at a wedding?

Besides your list of taboo songs that may remind you of a bad relationship, you might want to ask your DJ to avoid songs that talk about failed romances, toxic in-laws, or songs about sadness. Examples of these include: “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”, “Mother-in-Law”, “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” “Gold Digger”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, or “Please Release Me.” Songs about sensitive topics like “Cotton Eye Joe” should be avoided as well.

Can a wedding DJ play any song?

Basically, yes. They can play any song, as long as it’s in their collection. When it comes to the legal considerations, as long as the DJ has downloaded the songs legally and the music is restricted to private use, you’re in the clear. This means the songs played at your wedding can’t be used on a publicly wedding video - just for your private event.

Where do wedding DJs get their music?

It depends on the wedding DJ service you book. Still, Taskers may get their music from Apple Music, Crossfader Music Pack, DJ Record Pools, Beatport, Soundcloud, YouTube, Shazam, or even your personal Spotify playlist (we know you’ve already got a “wedding soundtrack” collection on there!). As a general reminder, make sure that the Tasker has downloaded the songs legally and, if necessary, has the licences needed so you can use the songs on a publicly available video.

What equipment will my DJ bring?

Some DJ equipment may include a DJ controller and laptop, DJ turntables, mixers, faders, subwoofers, PA speakers, extension cords, and a wireless microphone. Make sure you ask your Tasker if you or the event venue will need to provide any equipment. Run into any tech problems on the big day? Tell your DJ and wedding coordinator that they can find amplifier repair specialists (as well as other experts) on Airtasker!

What do wedding DJ services include?

When you hire a fantastic wedding DJ for your wedding reception, you may get more than just someone with an ear for music, lots of songs on deck, and a fancy sound system. Though it will depend on the Tasker you hire and your own requirements, you can usually expect the following to be included in your wedding DJ’s services:

Background music for mood setting

Background music isn’t just something fun for you and your guests to listen to - it’s also a crucial mood-setter that can make or break the tone of your reception. A Tasker can help you craft playlists based on your preference - whether you want a rave-like reception, a romantic night under the stars, or a 90s and 00s vibe.

You can also tell the Tasker whether you want the reception to end on an upbeat note that’ll get everyone on the dance floor or a slow ballad for you and your partner to end the night with.

Creating playlists and do-not-play lists

While some couples have “their song” to dance to, others may struggle with picking a track for their first dance, their grand entrance, father-daughter dances, and so on. A Tasker can help you decide on songs that are both meaningful and in tune with your reception theme.

They can also coordinate with you regarding your “do not play” list. Please make sure you tell your wedding DJ about any songs or artists they should avoid. If there’s a surprise dance performance or song number for your reception, the DJ should also have the necessary music or backing track. They should also know when in the program they have to play it.

A Tasker may also take some creative freedom with your chosen songs, using them to create mash-ups, remixes, or medleys. These can provide smooth transitions from one part of the program to another.

Providing sound equipment

A good DJ will most likely have their sound equipment. They can bring these high-quality speakers, mixers, microphones, and cables over to your venue, take charge of set-up and set-down, and do all the necessary sound checks before your guests arrive. Getting a DJ who has their equipment is advantageous since they already know their equipment by heart, and you won’t have to worry about renting a sound system from the venue.

If you need to rent equipment for your reception, you may want to consider getting a local tech support specialist to ensure everything is in working order before the program begins.
