When hiring a wedding DJ, you need to know more than just their schedule. Some things to ask the Tasker include:

  • How long have they been in the business?
  • What equipment will they use, and will they provide everything?
  • What’s the backup plan in case their equipment or speakers don’t work?
  • Can you provide your own playlist and a “do not” playlist?
  • Can they take requests?
  • Do they take breaks, and what happens during this time?

First off, your wedding DJ should know whether they need to MC your reception. Next, they should know how to pronounce your names. The Tasker should know what songs or artists to avoid and if they should take requests. The DJ will also appreciate being informed of how you want the night to end - on an upbeat note or with a sweet, romantic song.

Besides your list of taboo songs that may remind you of a bad relationship, you might want to ask your DJ to avoid songs that talk about failed romances, toxic in-laws, or songs about sadness. Examples of these include: “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover”, “Mother-in-Law”, “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now,” “Gold Digger”, “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”, or “Please Release Me.” Songs about sensitive topics like “Cotton Eye Joe” should be avoided as well. 

Basically, yes. They can play any song, as long as it’s in their collection. When it comes to the legal considerations, as long as the DJ has downloaded the songs legally and the music is restricted to private use, you’re in the clear. This means the songs played at your wedding can’t be used on a publicly wedding video - just for your private event. 

It depends on the wedding DJ service you book. Still, Taskers may get their music from Apple Music, Crossfader Music Pack, DJ Record Pools, Beatport, Soundcloud, YouTube, Shazam, or even your personal Spotify playlist (we know you’ve already got a “wedding soundtrack” collection on there!). As a general reminder, make sure that the Tasker has downloaded the songs legally and, if necessary, has the licences needed so you can use the songs on a publicly available video.

Some DJ equipment may include a DJ controller and laptop, DJ turntables, mixers, faders, subwoofers, PA speakers, extension cords, and a wireless microphone.
