Brother Ls14s - thread is not catching when I sew, it is super loose and then the thread snaps, I have taken the machine apart and now the needle is hitting the bobbin casing

I have new leather jacket and the length of the arms need shortening just a little bit from the coughs. It’s soft leather , no belts and buckles and no hard material. Plain leather jacket with the inner inside.
