The transatlantic colonization brought about a seismic shift in the perception of Afro hair. Western beauty standards, which favored straight hair, began to permeate societies globally, implanting negative ideas into the minds of Black women. This shift pressured many to alter their natural coils and curls, often through damaging processes, in an effort to fit into a homogenized image of beauty.
