The most common type of dash cam is single-lens. This is generally installed to look out of the front of your windscreen. You can also get a dual-lens dash cam, with the second camera either filming your car's interior or out of the rear windscreen.
Dash cams are legal in Australia as long as you use them as intended. However, you cannot deliberately film or share footage of people on private property (such as in their home, garden or garage).
If you’re filming the inside of your vehicle where other people are present, for example if you drive a taxi or work for a ride-sharing app, then you should make it clear with signs that there are cameras present.
Most dash cam models work with an external memory card like an sd card. They record short segments of video that you can view by loading the videos onto a computer or similar device. Be aware that many cameras start recording over previous videos once the card is full, so if there's anything you want to watch or review, you should do so as soon as possible.
There are two options to power your dash cam. One is to use your car's cigarette lighter. Your installer should be able to put the wire into your dashboard to keep things tidy. The downside is that you can't use the lighter for USB chargers for phones.
Alternatively, you can hardwire the dash cam into your car's power circuit, which keeps the cigarette lighter free for other devices.
Most models also have a small battery and a parking mode to keep recording if you have to turn off the car after an accident, but this shouldn't be used as the main source of power.
Because dash cams provide a neutral account of what happened in an accident, they are admissible in court as evidence. This helps to show an event as it truly happened and takes away from the he-said/she-said nature of traffic accidents.

What do dash cam installers do?
There are two main types of dash cams – those that are powered by your car’s cigarette lighter and those that are hardwired into your car’s electronics.
