What does a mechanic service usually include?
Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:
Minor service
This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.
Log book servicing / major service
A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tire pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tires, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.
Roadworthy certificate or pink slip
A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tires, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.
Major and minor repairs
Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.Â

Vehicle: 2016 Chrysler Town & Country (3.6L Pentastar V6) Location: North Austin (Walnut Creek) Parts/Tools Supplied: Yes (New throttle body gasket, resonator grommets, dielectric grease, 24mm socket, and torque wrench) Description: Looking for an experienced mobile mechanic to help me wrap up a repair on my van and diagnose a few codes. I got halfway through fixing some issues from a botched oil change, but the plastic intake is fighting me and I need a pro to take over. What I need help with: * Seat the air resonator: I have the new throttle body gasket, new rubber mounting grommets, and dielectric grease. I just can't get the resonator to pop onto the engine's ball studs. Might need silicone spray and the right touch to get it flush. * Double-check my oil cap: I just installed a new oil filter cap (with the built-in bypass) to address a P06DD code. Once the intake is on and we can start the engine, I have a 24mm socket and torque wrench here for you to use to verify my torque and check for pressure leaks. * Diagnose a P0305 and P0420: The intake resonator is off right now, so the cylinder 5 coil is sitting wide open. Need you to test the coil/wiring for the misfire, run live data on the O2 sensor for the cat code, and let me know your professional diagnosis on what's actually failing. Stuff to bring: * Silicone spray or white lithium grease (just in case my dielectric grease doesn't cut it for the intake grommets) * OBD2 scanner that reads live data * Basic hand tools and socket set (10mm, etc.)

2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer LT, 73,500 miles; car randomly started dying while idling at stop lights in early January. I had the fuel assembly, fuel pump, and fuel regulator replaced at the recommendation of two separate auto repair shops. The car has repeatedly experienced issues starting ever since. This week, the service engine soon light came on and diagnostic scanner showed error code P0440. The error code was cleared, the car continues to have issues starting, and the service engine soon light popped back up yesterday. Current mechanic doesn't know what the exact issue is, but is GUESSING it might be spark plugs and/or coils. I am seeking a second opinion before I decide to continue putting more money towards repairs, or junking the vehicle.
