Top Interior Designer related questions

What is the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator?

While there is some cross-over, an interior designer is a degree-qualified professional who can consult on all aspects of interiors, including how the physical space is used. An interior decorator focuses on aesthetics and finishes, like furniture, fabrics, paint, and wall art.

Do I need an interior designer?

While some people choose to DIY, if you can find a good interior designer near you, it can be a solid investment that’ll save you from making costly mistakes. If you’re planning a home renovation project, an interior designer can give you the right advice from the start to help it go smoothly.

What’s involved in interior design?

Interior designers help you make your space more functional, beautiful, and enjoyable to use. This involves a process of consulting, planning, and then implementing the changes.

How do interior designers work?

You’ll need to start by telling your interior designer what your goals are so they can ask the right questions and create a plan. From there, they’ll engage any contractors needed to implement your plan, purchase the supplies and finishings, then set up your space.

What qualifications do interior designers have?

Check with your interior designer before you hire them, but generally, you can expect them to hold a four-year Bachelor degree as well as membership with relevant professional bodies.

How much does it cost to hire an interior designer?

The cost of an interior design job depends on the level of advice and styling needed, but it can start from around $70 for small tasks. If you need more complex consulting and/or project management, you’ll need to budget upwards of $250.

What does interior design include?

Interior designers provide professional advice on the use of space and interior styling for your home or commercial space. Their job is to help you avoid making expensive design mistakes, get more out of your space, and hopefully increase its value. It’s why finding a skilled interior designer near you is something every homeowner should do!

The process your interior designer will follow and the inclusions you can expect will depend on the type of services you need.

Full house design

Hiring an interior designer to work their magic on your entire house will give it a fresh look and a more cohesive feel from room to room. If you can find a great interior designer near you, they’ll likely already have a good understanding of your climate and lifestyle. But before they get started, they’ll also look at how you use the spaces, find out your likes and dislikes, and discuss your goals. You’ll work together to come up with a plan, purchase any supplies needed, and help liaise with tradespeople to create your new look.

Single room design

Whether it’s a kitchen renovation, bathroom upgrade, or setting up a “big kid” room, your interior designer can help! A minor room restyle will mean doing up a plan, then sourcing and upgrading your accessories and soft furnishings. Or if it’s a major project (e.g. kitchen/bathroom renovation, new floor installation, etc.) they may work with a team of experts to manage the project. Once the heavy lifting is done, your interior designer will choose the perfect accessories to bring your space to life.

Design clever storage solutions

If you feel like you’ve run out of space or don’t know where to put your things, an interior designer can help They’ll come into your home, assess your situation, and recommend storage solutions that fit your space and have enough room for your things. That way, your home will look better, be easier to keep tidy, and finding your things becomes less of a mission. Your interior designer will help you make the most of the space you have with advice on cupboards, garage shelving, and wardrobe organising.

Interior designer £150 + £400 shopping budget

£150

Brentford, Greater London, TW8

23rd Oct 2018

Looking for an interior designer (can be a student) to help us reimagine our rented 1 bedroom apartment. looking for a design that is nature inspired but nothing "permanent" as we are renting. The apartment only has two small windows that are difficult to open as they open onto a busy footpath. We are only going to be in the country for another year so don't want to buy anything expensive that we wouldnt be happy to give away after 12-18 months so creative shopping a must here. Think minimalistic but forest and Bali inspired with lots of plants, possibly a water element that doubles as an air purifier? Might be good for third year student looking to add to portfolio while being paid for it? Budget of £500 for shopping and £100 for services. - We will need a very basic mock up of what it will look like but this can be a sketch - does not need to be cad design.
