Intervals for car servicing are set out in your vehicle’s service manual. Depending on your make and model, servicing is usually required every 10-15,000km or 6 months. If you don’t travel far, you’ll need your car checked annually.

Mobile mechanics are the most convenient way to get your car serviced because they come to you. And without the expense of workshop overheads, you’ll often pay less. The main downside is that on rare occasions, your mobile mechanic may be unable to perform some less common services due to limited supplies and equipment at hand.

A mobile mechanic can complete almost all the same mechanical repairs and maintenance jobs you’d get from a mechanic shop. They can do anything from simple oil changes, through to log book servicing and roadworthy certificates. As long as they have the parts on hand and can do the work from a flat surface, they should be able to get the job done.

By requesting a mechanic near you on Airtasker, you’ll receive plenty of offers from qualified mechanics within minutes. This makes it easy to find the cheapest car mechanic near you that fits your budget.

The best way to find a skilled and reliable mechanic near you is to post your task on Airtasker. Outline what your car service or repair needs are, and you’ll start to hear from rated and reviewed mechanics near you within minutes.

A mobile mechanic comes to your home or workplace, so there’s no need to drop your car off or arrange a lift. They’re a good fit for routine servicing, oil changes, battery replacements, brake work and most diagnostics, meaning anything that can be done on a flat surface with the tools in their van. A mechanic shop has hoists and specialist equipment, so it’s usually the better choice for heavy jobs like gearbox or major engine repairs. Not sure which you need? Describe the problem when you post your task, and mechanics can let you know in their offers whether they can do it on site.

It’s possible, depending on who’s available near you and whether the parts are easy to get. Post your task with today as the due date and include your car’s make, model and year, plus what’s wrong, so mechanics can check they have the right parts before they make an offer. Jobs like battery replacements, brake pads or car diagnostics are more likely to be sorted on the day than repairs that need parts ordered in. If your car won’t start or isn’t safe to drive, say so in your task, because a mobile mechanic can come to you.

A typical mechanic job on Airtasker costs between $120 and $250, with a median of $175, based on completed Airtasker bookings in Australia over the past quarter (April–June 2026). These are settled prices — what customers actually paid once the job was done, not just the asking price. Jobs usually close above the price first posted (a median of $150), so if you’re after a cheap mechanic near you, budget a little above your opening offer.

What you’ll pay depends on the job, your vehicle, and whether parts are supplied. Many mechanics quote by the hour, often around $90–$160 an hour for mobile work, plus parts and sometimes a call-out fee. So compare the total for the job, not just the hourly rate, and check whether parts are included when you compare offers.

What does a mechanic service usually include?

Whether they come to you or work from a mechanic shop, good mechanics near you are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mobile mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat surface to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles, so if you need a car fixed near you, this is where most jobs fall. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Mobile mechanic needed – 2004 Mitsubishi Express won’t idle Hi, I’m looking for a mobile mechanic to come to my location in Avalon Beach, Northern Sydney and diagnose/fix an issue with my 2004 Mitsubishi Express. The van starts normally, but it won’t hold idle. As soon as I take my foot off the accelerator, the RPM drops and the engine stalls. It will stay running if I keep my foot slightly on the accelerator. I’ve already checked the air intake/vacuum side and it seems to be getting air properly. I suspect the idle air control valve / idle control system around the throttle body may be dirty or blocked and could need cleaning, but I’d like someone experienced to inspect it and confirm the cause before replacing any parts. Important: the van cannot be driven, so I need someone who can come to Avalon Beach. The job would be to: * Diagnose the cause of the idle/stalling problem * Check the throttle body and idle air control system * Clean the relevant components if appropriate * Fix the problem if possible * Advise if any parts need to be replaced Please send me your quote/offer and availability, and let me know if you have experience with Mitsubishi Express vans. Thanks!

Car inspection - need a mechanic

Freshwater NSW 2096, Australia

Hi, I am looking to purchase a car but would like to bring a mechanic to the inspection to validate it’s a good purchase and run the usual checks. In particular the car owner said ‘The radio works, as do parking sensors, reversing camera etc but you cannot connect mobile via Bluetooth. My mechanic believes it is a fuse’. So I would like to ensure it’s just a fuse. The car is a 2013 Ford Kuga Titanium TF Auto AWD

Mattie turned up and the seller didn’t answer for over half an hour. Turns out they’d supplied the number wrong, and despite the fact he’d left and travelled some distance he turned around and did the job. Also communicated impeccably. Highly recommend.

Wire factory reverse camera to aftermarket head unit — 2012 JDM HiAce

$150

Beacon Hill NSW 2100, Australia

30th Jul 2026

Need an auto electrician to wire my factory reverse camera into my aftermarket head unit. Vehicle: 2012 Toyota HiAce H200 (Japanese import) Head unit: Aftermarket double-DIN with RCA reverse camera input Issue: There are two factory plugs behind the dash: a white multi-pin plug and a grey multi-pin plug. * I have a camera retention harness for the white plug that converts it to RCA for the head unit. * The grey plug also connected to the factory head unit, and the camera won’t work without it. I haven’t been able to find a compatible harness or wiring diagram. I attempted to identify the wiring on the grey plug with a multimeter but ended up blowing a couple of fuses. The BCM has since been reset and the van is now 100% operational—everything works except the reverse camera. Looking for someone to: * Identify the purpose of the grey plug and wire it correctly. * Connect the factory reverse camera to the head unit’s RCA input. * Tidy up my previous wiring attempt. * Check there are no remaining electrical issues. What’s already done: * Head unit installed and working. * White camera retention harness (new, unused). * Factory reverse camera still fitted. Cheers.
