Professional dog trainers are experienced in working with hundreds of dogs. They can diagnose issues, spot patterns, and tailor a training plan that’ll work best for your dog.

Some common dog training techniques your dog trainer may use include:

Alpha-dog training - teaching your dog who their master is

Positive reinforcement - rewarding your dog for good behaviour

Clicker training - associating positive behavior with a clicking sound

Getting a dog trainer near you to come to your home isn’t just convenient. It can help your dog to learn new behaviors in familiar surroundings. You can use familiar cues and triggers to make it easier to reinforce the training yourself in between sessions with your professional dog trainer.

The best way to find top dog trainers near you is to post a request on Airtasker. You’ll get offers from experienced dog trainers in your local area, and you can choose a top-rated trainer who fits your requirements.

Dog training costs depend on your location, whether the trainer comes to you, your trainer’s experience, and the type of training. A private dog trainer may charge anywhere from $40-$100 per session, while group dog training classes cost anywhere from $120-$250 for a 6-week program.

What does a dog training class include?

Dog training includes a range of techniques and lessons to help your dog learn obedience, commands, and appropriate behaviours in different environments. While it’s ideal if you start training while your pup is young (approx 2-3 months old), more mature dogs can also benefit from dog training. Here are a few things you can expect from a dog training class or session:

Responding to commands

A dog trainer will help you train your dog to respond to voice commands, like sit, stay, heel, and come (when you call them). Your trainer will help show you how to establish leadership over your dog so that they listen to your commands and do what they’re told. Common techniques used are movement, actions, eye contact, treats, and praise.

Leash obedience

Leash obedience is essential for safe and comfortable dog walking, so you can be motivated and confident to take your dog for regular walks. Your dog trainer will gradually introduce your dog to their collar and leash, using playtime and treats so they associate it with good times. You’ll practice walking around with your dog on a leash in a safe, enclosed area. Once your puppy is comfortable with their leash, you can gradually introduce them to different outside environments.

House training

House training or toilet training your puppy is something you’ll want to start from the moment you bring your dog home, to minimise messes. If you can get a dog trainer near you to train your puppy at home, it’ll make it much easier to house-train your dog. Your dog trainer will give you tips around the best feeding schedules, when and where to take your puppy to do their business, and how to reinforce good house training practices with praise and treats.

Socialising

Your dog trainer can help you socialise your dog - both to animals and people. If they organise dog training classes with a group of pets and owners, it’s a safe environment for your dog to get used to being around other animals and people. If your dog’s having a tough time adjusting, your trainer will step in with some strategies like regular walking in suitable areas, remaining calm, gentle touch, and limiting new social events to once a week.

Before reading bellow we are seeking someone highly qualified wirh anxiety and dog behaviour, someone who can come to us in Miami on our usually routine morning walks to help give me and my partner tips on cubas anxiety and reactive issues. My partner and I are in need of a strong professional who’s able to come to help us with our 2 year old pocket sized bully. He is super anxious we’ve just started him in cbd and this anxiousness has turned into aggressive behaviour towards any dog he sees. Out in public he can’t relax and it’s very obvious his suffering high anxiety and like shakes and looks around constantly and can’t handle. He was saved from a bad breeder and I took him home at 3 -4 months and he has never left that space with his mum which I think has a part to play in that. And mum is reactive herself :( If your confident you can help please accept my offer and we will work out payments as I know everyone’s different and it won’t be what I’m offering on here - Due date: Flexible

Hi just after a qoute regarding 2 American staffys. The male axel is 2 and Aria the female is 11 months both can sit, stay, drop, shake with both hands and hi 10 when asked. I can feed their main meal at night together with no aggression. But as I put dry food in there bowls during the day, axel the 2 year old will guard the bowls and not let the younger one eat. They are both a night mere to walk on the lead I use to ride the male along the bike at least 4 times a week but unfortunately this had to stop as I couldn't handle both at the same time and leaving one home just didn't work. When we do take them out we are usually in a locked basketball court where they are both of lead. If you could help settle them down that would be great thanks Ashleigh and cass

Hi everyone i have a really naughty beagle x kelpie. He’s about 7 months old and he isn’t toilet trained. We’ve tried puppy pads and taking him outside but he still does it inside. He barks all the time really loudly. He barks for no reason even if he hears the slightest noise . He also barks at people and other dogs but isn’t aggressive to anyone. Tips his food bowl over, chews furniture and runs away from you when you try to catch him at the park or if he’s gotten outside. PLEASE someone help me!! i’ve just moved into my first place with my boyfriend and i don’t want my loud naughty dog to ruin our reputation. We’ve tried our best to train him but obviously it wasn’t good enough. Please contact me asap!

We have two male dogs, one is 2 and the other 3, they have always pretty much got along despite some tension here and there. The younger dog had to have a surgery which required us to separate the dogs for his recovery (we didn’t want to as we have done this before in the past and faced same problem). They have been separated the past two weeks and we now cannot put them back together without them going to fight. We always take them away them before anything happens. We have tried to walk them together today but that did not help (this worked last time). We believe they get quite jealous of each other especially around us. We don’t know what to do and think we need a professional to help us as it is quite upsetting. We are available weekdays after 5 or weekends.

Timothy has been a great help just in the first session and has made us feel better already. He has so much knowledge and was very calm, exactly what we needed. We look forward to our future sessions. Definitely would recommend.

I have a 1 year old lab x kelpie. He is a beautiful pup with such a nice nature but in the last few weeks he has been getting aggressive at other dogs over objects like frisbees or tennis balls. He has also started to growl if we(his 2 owners) get close to a new treat he has been given. With his usual dinner and normal treats he gets he does not do this. I would also just like some help training his obedience on top of that. I’m happy to do group sessions or 1on1 because he is great with other dogs apart from this recent issue.

Bentley is a 4year old German Shepherd. He is a good dog but I do have a few areas I would like him to be better in. This includes being less excitable when people come to the house, being better at walking on the lead, responding better to commands (he seems to have selective hearing) and he is very on-and-off with other dogs (sometimes the interaction is fine, sometimes he tries to dominate them). I'd like to get some more information about your experience training dogs, how the sessions would run, how long the sessions would be (I'm only thinking half hour or maybe up to 1hr sessions) and a quote for these services. Thank you, Jacqui P.s. ignore the date it needs to be done by
