What does landscaping include?
When you book your landscaper, it’s important to let them know in your task exactly what work you need to be done - from simple maintenance services to a complex landscape design for your outdoors. That way, they’ll be able to make you a fair offer and bring along the right tools for the job.
Not sure where to start? If you need a range of general landscaping services, grab a notepad and pen, then go for a wander outside. Make a note of anything that needs tidying up, trimming, or removing. Then make sure you include these tasks in your listing.
Another way to think about your landscaping is to break it down by the type of specialised skill or service you need, such as installing a water feature or irrigation system, designing garden beds, or planning the landscape of your pool area. Here are some of the jobs you might give to your landscaper and what you can expect to happen during the process.
Planning
When you’re undertaking a BIG change, it’s important to lay the groundwork with some planning first. A garden designer will help come up with ideas and map everything out on paper before you get started on your garden space makeover. Or you might hire a landscape architect to plan a larger commercial landscaping project in your local community or public outdoor space.
Earth and rocks
Don’t break your back over your backyard landscaping - no matter how little or how much you need to do. You can hire earthmoving contractors to do your trench digging, levelling, and even your pool excavation or boring excavation. They’ll bring the all tools and equipment needed to dig and move the earth so you (literally) don’t have to get your hands dirty.
Gardens
Planning a nice new garden bed to grow your own veggies, flower beds, shady trees, or just want to reduce the amount of ground you have to mow in your yard? Get some help with your garden landscaping and garden edging to get the project off your to-do list and done sooner. That way, you can get on with the fun bit in landscaping - planting!
Water
Where there are plants, there’s water. Make sure your plants get water when they need it (without having to remember to hose) with a drip irrigation system or a sprinkler system installation. Or make your garden more beautiful with a garden pond or water features. Either way, getting your water systems sorted is so much quicker and easier with an extra pair of hands or a landscaper near you who knows what they’re doing.
Trees
Trees are wonderful things, but sometimes, a tree’s gotta go. If you’re not experienced, you should never do chainsawing, stump grinding, wood chipping and mulching, or land clearing yourself. That’s something you should leave up to an experienced landscaper with the right equipment and background to get the job done properly and safely.
Building and installations
A big component of landscaping is installing things to make your space more functional and beautiful. Things like retaining walls, artificial grass installation, landscape lighting, or even garden benches to sit on. It’s always best to get a landscaper to help when it involves heavy lifting or specialist equipment. Garden landscapers can help you get your installations done safely and help you start enjoying your space much sooner.

Landscaper to redo garden in front driveway
$250
Buff Point NSW, Australia

Desperately seeking someone to rescue my front garden from its current state of “suburban shrub sadness.” The hedges have served their time – now it’s time for them to go! I’m dreaming of a low-maintenance glow-up. Think agave, hardy plants, and anything else that thrives on neglect (because my plant parenting skills are… non-existent). If it survives without daily pep talks or constant watering, I’m sold. I’ve attached: • A photo of the current hedge horror • A few planty ideas that ChatGPT kindly created so I could pretend I know what I’m doing Got better ideas? Amazing – I’m all ears and totally open to your expert (or even semi-competent) suggestions. Bonus: If you do a great job, there’s more garden work waiting for you. Let’s make this front yard fabulous – and maybe even make my neighbors suspicious of how suddenly stylish I’ve become. Type of gardening: Other Size of garden: Under 50m² Has green waste bin: Yes

Phegans Bay NSW 2256, Australia

Looking for a landscaper (Central Coast NSW). Price negotiable. We’re looking for someone to help rework the front of our yard and fix a few long-standing issues from a previous job. - The front steps constantly collect mulch that falls from above — the current slope and layout just aren’t working. We’d love help rethinking the levels, improving the flow, and possibly raising or extending retaining walls to stabilise the area. - We also had a previous gardener remove some banana trees and yakkas without our request, and now have a bunch of awkward exposed stumps that need removing and replacing with something that actually fits the space. - There’s also a gap between our driveway and the neighbour’s we’d love to landscape properly — even just something clean, low-maintenance, and intentional. Ideally looking for someone with experience in levelling, planting, and creative problem-solving on sloped blocks. Open to ideas and keen to get started soon. Thanks in advance! Type of gardening: Other Size of garden: Under 50m² Has green waste bin: Yes
