Top Arborist related questions

An arborist is a highly experienced and formally trained expert in tree health and vegetation management, including shrubberies and other types of woody plants. Arborists review existing landscaping and gardens of property owners to determine whether any pests or diseases are present and whether there are risks to people or property. They can also help proactively plan new gardens and provide recommendations and the best practices on tree work or arboriculture.

The cost of hiring an arborist in the United States may range between $70 to $200 per hour. This can go up to $300, depending on the state you live in. The rates will also depend on the size and complexity of the job - whether it’s a simple tree assessment or a comprehensive report. For tree removal costs, expect rates to fall between $400 and $2,000. Stump removal costs can range from $60 to $1,000. Be sure to include all information about your task to get the best quotes and find the right arborist in your area.

At Airtasker, you can simply specify the type of tree work you need and your budget, then you'll start getting offers from certified arborists nearby. You can also check the International Society of Arboriculture to determine if the Taskers are ISA certified arborists.

An arborist frequently works with trees that may be diseased or overrun by pests. They also help find solutions to problems like dead or dying branches that pose a falling risk, and trees that have grown too close to power lines.

An arborist report can take 7 to 10 days to complete due to the comprehensive nature of the report. Your arborist will use aerial and onsite inspections to assess tree health and identification, current and proposed safety concerns, and any factors that may affect potential removal.

While arborists are not required to get industry accreditation, being an ISA certified arborist is a marker of trust. The highest credential for this profession is a board certified master arborist. Some professionals also take on on-the-job training at tree care companies. When hiring a Tasker, be sure to ask about their experience and whether they are an ISA certified arborist.

Some states require an arborist license to carry on work in tree care or arboriculture. For example, a standard arborist license is required to practice arboriculture in Rhode Island. If you're in California, arborists must register with the Contractors State License Board. Ask your Tasker if they have the license to work as tree care professionals.

What do arborist services include?

Arborists are often referred to as tree surgeons because of the intricate nature of their work and their focus on tree health when making recommendations. They consider all proposed outcomes before offering a solution that’s suitable for the situation. Whether for tree planting or risk assessment and management of tree diseases, here are some of the common services you can get from arborists in your area:

Arborist report

An arborist report is usually needed to support decisions on tree removal or to provide property owners with information regarding tree health for development approval. This includes general information about the tree, the date and time of the assessment, proposed measures or industry standards for preservation, and a site plan. Your arborist will check for pest problems and diseases, any structural defects, and identify species of plants and trees present before writing their report. They’ll make written recommendations on tree work in the report, supported by photos and evidence.

Tree trimming, pruning & removal

Tree trimming and pruning are necessary to maintain the health and safety of many trees. An arborist makes sure your trees are pruned or maintained in a way that enables them to flourish and grow afterward. Trees may be trimmed or pruned for safety reasons, or to ensure their long-term viability. If a tree is diseased or dying, tree removal may be the only option. Your arborist consultant will consider all factors before making a recommendation for removal.

Annual tree inspection

An annual tree inspection is a proactive way to ensure the safety and longevity of the trees in your garden. Tree care professionals will thoroughly inspect trees and vegetation on your property to identify current and preventable concerns. They will then provide guidelines for maintenance or an action plan to rectify any problems, so your garden can continue to thrive.

Garden mapping

Garden mapping can be used in any garden but it’s especially useful for heritage-listed gardens. Your arborist will prepare a catalog that identifies species types and locations for each tree or shrub in your garden. You might use mapping to help manage your garden or plan future landscaping changes.
