The task is to dig away the soil (9 metres) on a gentle slope and form up steps down to the gully below. It is a shaded area and as each step is dug, the next one should be easy to get at and so on. The soil is fairly soft and not rocky, mostly top soil. We have planted the slope with palms so the digging is easy. Maybe finish each individual step with pavers embedded into the soil. The actual method can be "path of least resistance" or whatever works best. It should design itself as the work progresses along.
