Intervals for car servicing are set out in your vehicle’s service manual. Depending on your make and model, servicing is usually required every 10-15,000km or 6 months. If you don’t travel far, you’ll need your car checked annually.
Mobile mechanics are the most convenient way to get your car serviced because they come to you. And without the expense of workshop overheads, you’ll often pay less. The main downside is that on rare occasions, your mobile mechanic may be unable to perform some less common services due to limited supplies and equipment at hand.
A mobile mechanic can complete almost all the same mechanical repairs and maintenance jobs you’d get from a mechanic shop. They can do anything from simple oil changes, through to log book servicing and roadworthy certificates. As long as they have the parts on hand and can do the work from a flat surface, they should be able to get the job done.
By requesting a mechanic near you on Airtasker, you’ll receive plenty of offers from qualified mechanics within minutes. This makes it easy to find the cheapest car mechanic near you that fits your budget.
The best way to find a skilled and reliable mechanic near you is to post your task on Airtasker. Outline what your car service or repair needs are, and you’ll start to hear from rated and reviewed mechanics near you within minutes.
A mobile mechanic comes to your home or workplace, so there’s no need to drop your car off or arrange a lift. They’re a good fit for routine servicing, oil changes, battery replacements, brake work and most diagnostics, meaning anything that can be done on a flat surface with the tools in their van. A mechanic shop has hoists and specialist equipment, so it’s usually the better choice for heavy jobs like gearbox or major engine repairs. Not sure which you need? Describe the problem when you post your task, and mechanics can let you know in their offers whether they can do it on site.
It’s possible, depending on who’s available near you and whether the parts are easy to get. Post your task with today as the due date and include your car’s make, model and year, plus what’s wrong, so mechanics can check they have the right parts before they make an offer. Jobs like battery replacements, brake pads or car diagnostics are more likely to be sorted on the day than repairs that need parts ordered in. If your car won’t start or isn’t safe to drive, say so in your task, because a mobile mechanic can come to you.
A typical mechanic job on Airtasker costs between $120 and $250, with a median of $175, based on completed Airtasker bookings in Australia over the past quarter (April–June 2026). These are settled prices — what customers actually paid once the job was done, not just the asking price. Jobs usually close above the price first posted (a median of $150), so if you’re after a cheap mechanic near you, budget a little above your opening offer.
What you’ll pay depends on the job, your vehicle, and whether parts are supplied. Many mechanics quote by the hour, often around $90–$160 an hour for mobile work, plus parts and sometimes a call-out fee. So compare the total for the job, not just the hourly rate, and check whether parts are included when you compare offers.

What does a mechanic service usually include?
Whether they come to you or work from a mechanic shop, good mechanics near you are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:
Minor service
This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mobile mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat surface to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.
Log book servicing / major service
A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.
Roadworthy certificate or pink slip
A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.
Major and minor repairs
Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles, so if you need a car fixed near you, this is where most jobs fall. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Mechanic Needed: 2005 Honda Jazz Diagnostic & Repair
$150
Adamstown Heights NSW 2289, Australia
15th Aug 2026
I just purchased this 2005 Honda Jazz in Sydney today and brought it to Newcastle. I am looking for a qualified, independent mechanic to diagnose and repair two specific issues. Please see the attached photos for reference. 1. Front-Left Noise & Vibration (Priority) There is a loud noise and vibration coming from the front-left side. It happens at idle, while braking, and significantly when accelerating from a stop (worsens when turning right). Interestingly, I did not perceive this issue at all during the first 40 minutes of driving it today; it only became evident after that period. I am concerned that a short test drive (10-15 minutes) might not reveal the issue, so please keep this in mind. This is my main safety concern, and I need to identify the exact cause (e.g., CV joint, engine mount) and get it repaired. 2. Door Issue The door does not close properly, and due to a dent on the lower part, water is leaking inside. I need to determine if this is just a common latch/lock mechanism failure or if there is hinge/frame misalignment causing the issue. Budget & Priorities The car has 7 months of rego left. My goal is to get these two issues resolved, but I am being mindful of my budget. If the diagnostic uncovers any extremely expensive repairs that are not critical for safety or weatherproofing, I am open to discussing postponing those specific items. Deliverables & Timeline: A precise diagnostic report and an itemized list of parts needed for the repair. A quote for labor costs. Timing: I am looking for someone to perform the diagnostic as early as tomorrow (Sunday) and, if possible, carry out the necessary repairs between Sunday and this coming Thursday. Please confirm your availability for tomorrow. Thanks! after diagnosis I prefer purchase by myself or at least compare prices and delivery times in online shops for saving money. Unless delivery time is too long or difference on price is not much.

Clutch replacement 2007 Mitsubishi Triton Hi, I’m looking for a reliable mechanic to replace the clutch on my 2007 Mitsubishi Triton ML 3.5L V6 petrol 4x4 manual. The clutch is slipping when warm (revs increase but vehicle moves slowly) and has a high bite point. I’d like the clutch checked first to confirm if adjustment is possible, but I’m expecting it may need a replacement. Looking for someone who can: * Supply and fit a quality clutch kit OR fit a supplied clutch kit * Check flywheel and machine if required * Provide a clear quote upfront * Complete the job at a reasonable price Located 2264 (Lake Macquarie area). Please include your labour cost, parts options and availability. Thanks.

Mobile Mechanic Pre-Purchase Inpection
$250
Hamilton North NSW, Australia
14th Jun 2026
I’m looking for a mobile mechanic to inspect a 2012 Skoda Octavia Scout diesel wagon before buying. The car runs and drives, but the engine light is on and the battery is flat, so I need someone who can bring a diagnostic scan tool / OBD2 scanner to read the fault codes and give me a basic opinion on whether it looks like a minor issue or a major repair risk. I’m mainly after a general pre-purchase inspection and the engine light diagnosis. Please send your offer if you have a scanner and experience with European diesel cars. Thanks!
Scott did a fantastic job with the pre-purchase inspection. He sent through a very detailed report by email, including photos, and gave me a clear understanding of the condition of the car. The service honestly exceeded my expectations. Communication was great, the report was thorough, and it gave me a lot more confidence in making a decision. I’d highly recommend Scott to anyone needing a vehicle inspection.
