What does a reverse car camera installation include?
You’ll need a professional reverse car camera installation for the unit to work effectively. Fortunately, thanks to technology advancement, you can get yours installed by a mobile mechanic without having to leave your home. Here’s what you can expect during your car camera installation:
Step 1: Install the camera in the best position
Most cameras are designed to attach to your number plate, but your installer will determine the correct placement for your type of vehicle to ensure maximum visibility. For larger cars or commercial vehicles, they may need to attach the camera in a higher position to give you the visibility you need.Â
Step 2: Connect the power supply
Minor electrical work is completed to connect the camera to the power source, usually the wires powering your rear tail lights. Once the installation is completed, your camera will activate when you select reverse gear.
Step 3: Install the camera monitor for viewing
It’s important that your monitor is installed in a comfortable position for you to view images safely while reversing as well as ensure a clear view through the windscreen. Monitors can be mounted on the windscreen or dash, or you may choose to install an integrated option that combines your reversing monitor with your rear-view mirror. You may even want to consider adding dash cam installation at the same time.
Step 4: Test your camera while stationary

Have a 2022 Audi A3, recently did a routine service in Audi Dealer. Rear camera has stopped working recently and the Audi consultant advised the below in the report: Logged static fault in relation J772 reverse control module. Carry out the test plan, checked SVM is update to date, carry out basic setting, still not working. We will continue to diagnose throughout the day. Checked GFF no comms with CU, removed tailgate trim found vehicle has been in an accident. Checked connector for camera found to be damaged, also checked wiring found open circuit in several wires for the reverse camera. I have a 2013 VW Tiguan. Original factory radio failed and then swapped out for an apple carplay Kenwood unit. While radio etc still functions, the reverse camera will not function. Would prefer to start again with better quality apple carplay radio/nav unit and integrated new reverse camera unit. Camera can be mounted behind number plate or nearby - happy to disconnect Tiguan camera and leave in place.
