What do deck installation services include?

Deck installation services generally cover everything from preparing the ground underneath your deck to covering the decking edges. When you book a decking installation specialist via Airtasker, you may get an expert (or two) who will bring the necessary tools, help you pick the suitable materials, and help you get a new deck that becomes the envy of your neighbourhood!

In general, here’s what you can expect to happen once your deck installers arrive:

Planning the layout

Deck installation starts with the Tasker checking your design and planning the layout. They may use spray paint, flags, string, or other markers to visualise the edges and midpoint of your deck. This step helps them plot where to place the eight support posts of the deck.

Covering the ground

Moisture is a deck’s greatest enemy, so the next step to building a deck that will last is to keep moisture away. A Tasker will do this by laying weed control fabric and gravel or placing concrete slabs on the area where you plan to put up your deck. Next, they’ll place a substructure made of steel, timber, or aluminium. Some installers may add extra moisture protection using materials like butyl tape.

Putting up the support posts

Next, the deck installers use concrete to create the caissons or support posts for the deck. They’ll allow the concrete to cure for 48 hours before proceeding to the next step.

Cutting and laying out the boards

Next, the Tasker cuts the boards to fit each part of your design. Then, they’ll lay them out, starting with the perimeter and centre beam. The deck installers usually use steel bracket ties for support and an electric planer to keep the boards flush.

After finishing this main frame of the deck, the main boards and decking material are installed. The deck installation specialists maintain ¼” gaps between the boards to allow the wood to expand and contract depending on the weather.

Finishing the deck

Finally, your Tasker bolts the wood planks to the caissons (support posts) using the anchor brackets. They’ll nail down the perimeter, check the entire deck, then let you take a look. And just like that, your deck is ready for you to furnish, decorate, and enjoy.
