When you request for Mandarin lessons via Airtasker, you’ll get a tutor who can conduct basic or advanced classes for you. You can ask for in-person lessons, or online sessions if this is something you prefer. You can also find teachers for toddlers, children, and even adults.
Your tutor’s approach may differ, as they may have learned Mandarin as a second language or they might be a native speaker from the start. But, overall, here is what you can expect when you start your Mandarin lessons with the help of a Tasker:
If you’re new to Mandarin, your Tasker may begin by teaching you how to introduce yourself and greet people. Your tutor may then explain Chinese numbers, time, money, and terms for various family members, occupations, and ages.
There is no Chinese alphabet since the characters are all syllables that are put together to create words. Hence, you’ll go straight to forming words or phrases. Next, your Mandarin tutor shows you how to construct basic phrases and questions.
Your Mandarin tutor needs to know your motivations for learning the language, since they may tailor this to your needs. For example, if you intend to do business with Mandarin speakers, you’ll need to learn business terms and etiquette. If you are vacationing in China, you’ll want to know how to request items from shops or order from a restaurant.
As you get deeper into the lessons, your tutor will cover Mandarin grammar elements, such as tones, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions. The four phonetic tones don’t exist in European languages and English, so it’ll require an attentive ear and lots of exercises for you to master this aspect of Mandarin.
Nouns don’t have articles or genders, nor distinctions between singular and plural. Verbs are relatively straightforward in Mandarin - they don’t change depending on person, tense, and number. Instead, you’ll make use of tense makers and measure words to convey additional information, all of which your tutor will test you on.
If you already know basic Mandarin, you may want more advanced lessons, such as those covering questions, negative statements, requesting items, “because” sentences, and more.
By this time, your Tasker may expect you to be able to read, listen, write, and speak quite a lot of Mandarin. They may have you read Mandarin books or watch Mandarin videos, have you converse with others in Mandarin, or even write essays in the language.

Hi, We have two boys - aged 4 and 7 - and we are keen to get them to learn Mandarin. The oldest has 1 lesson a week at school but we'd like to look at a permanent, 2 lessons a week after school i.e. 3-4pm or 3-430 We are flexible on days but would like to lock in the same days each week (except for holidays etc). Start date would be mid April Please let us know your thoughts on teaching two kids of different age and how much they would require to start to learn Mandarin but also still enjoy it. We do NOT want this to be hours of homework and drills for now, but a fun lesson that helps them develop pronunication and language skills. The ultimate goal is that by the time they are 16 or 17 they are fluent like a native.

I'm leaving on Wednesday to go to Taiwan for 1.5 weeks and would like to learn some useful phrases before I go (introductions, directions, etc.). I know this is last minute, but I would like to meet in a cafe in Gordon tomorrow (Monday 20th) any time in the afternoon to do this for about an hour (coffee on me too!).
Very helpful and kind! Emily and her partner gave me many good tips and recommendations for my trip and patiently taught me the right pronunciations.

My daughter is learning mandarin in school. She’s 4 years old. Unfortunately I cannot practice with her as I don’t speak mandarin. I would like someone to talk to her in mandarin for 1-2 hours a week. Given a young age I would like someone who can play with her or read stories while encouraging her to speak in mandarin.

I am looking for a Mandarin tutor to help my children continue their spoken (and possibly written) language. They have spent 3 years in HK learning simplified Mandarin and I would like to continue this in Australia. You will need to formulate lessons pitched at their differing levels (children are aged 9 through 15). One is continuing his studies at school now and the others I would just like to keep conversational Mandarin going for now.
