This depends on what the costume is, and how accurate or detailed you want it to be. Some Taskers take 25-40 hours for a costume. If you and your family want to go as The Incredibles and need a costume maker to create the leotards for you, it can take a couple of weeks. So if you’ve got an invite to a costume party or a Halloween celebration, it’s best to decide on your costumes ASAP.
First, you’ll need to look for reference photos or a sewing pattern. Then, get the necessary materials. Break the costume down into small portions, like the sleeves of a shirt or the bodice of a dress. Take the child’s measurements, cut out the pattern, then piece the costume together. Alternatively, you can book a costume maker near you. That way, you won’t need to stress out about your child’s outfit, and they’ll still have a chance of winning “Best Costume”!
That would depend on the kind of accessories that come with the costume. Our costume makers are seamstresses, meaning they specialise in sewn items. If you need wigs, shoes, or props to complete the look, we suggest visiting a shop near you instead. You can do this while your Tasker finishes up your garment. That way, when your costume is ready for fitting, your entire outfit will be complete!
Costume-making typically includes taking your reference photos, breaking them down into the pieces of the character’s outfit, and sewing an instantly recognisable costume. Taskers usually do this in preparation for Halloween or costume parties, but they can also handle requests from entertainers and event planners.
The specifics of what a costume maker can or can’t do may vary, so it’s best to make your task post as detailed as possible. This step helps Taskers evaluate your request and also ensures that you book a Tasker who can execute your dream costume. In general, here’s what our costume makers can do for you:
Costume-making is a little like bespoke tailoring - your Tasker provides the fabric and sewing materials and works with you to come up with an outfit. When you book an appointment with a costume maker, all you need to do is show your reference photos. No need to provide any sewing tools or cloth - tell your costume maker who you want to dress up as. Ideally, you should provide photos from all angles so that your Tasker can make a more accurate pattern for the costume.
Depending on what you’ve specified in your task post, your costume maker can meet you in their shop, your home, or office. This makes costume preparation extra-convenient!
Once you’ve given reference photos, your Tasker takes measurements and creates a pattern for the costume (or for each clothing item, if there are many). Whether you need a Harry Potter-inspired robe or a Disney Princess-type ball gown, your seamstress can put it together for you.
When each piece and garment of your costume has been cut and sewn together, it’s time to see the complete costume! Your Tasker may set up a fitting appointment so you can see the finished work. Then, you can suggest some adjustments or your Tasker can alter it to fit better. Once you’re happy with the look and feel of the costume, the Tasker turns over the costume and goes on their way.
And now that you’ve prepared your costume, it’s time to get ready for the party! Airtasker can also help with other pre-event needs such as birthday gift delivery, event planning, and party helpers. For a more accurate touch to your costume, you can even work with a makeup artist so that you’ll look the part!

This is a re-post from a task I posted two weeks ago. Had to re-post due to getting offers further away than expected. Are you handy with a sewing machine? I'm putting together a "Seasonal" costume for later this year. I have the fabric (can get more if needed) and the pattern (already cut to size), all I need now is someone who can put it together. This project may include some alteration work, too. I'm open to ideas to add to this costume, and will talk them over with the successful tasker.
I intend to hire Maureen for future costume projects.
