What does a mechanic service usually include?

Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Install head unit in van

Bondi NSW, Australia

22nd Jan 2023

I’ve been trying to upgrade my stereo head unit on my van. It’s a Mercedes Sprinter, 2010. I’ve bought the head unit, I’ve got the wiring harness but I’m having trouble with the wiring. When I plug the head unit in, the stereo it appears to go into demo mode. Then when I turn the engine on, the head unit crashes (and the first time I did it it blew the fuse). I think the harness or the the head unit needs to be re-wired. Looking for a bit of help. I also have a reverse camera that I’ve bought that I could do with some help installing. Priced low, open to and looking for a quote. Ideally Monday 23rd - Due date: Needs to be done on Monday, 23 January 2023

Mobile Motorbike mechanic - timing belt (suspected)

North Bondi NSW, Australia

9th Jan 2023

My 2001 vespa was briefly looked at by a mechanic in November and was told that they suspect the timing belt needs to be replaced (which likely hasn't been done ever - I've owned it for less than a year and drive sparingly). I wasn't able to have it fixed right then at that mechanic. It hasn't been driven since I found out there was a problem, but now, the throttle won't turn to drive it to a mechanic anywhere. I also need to register it, so I will need the green slip plus a regular service. - Due date: Flexible
