What does a mechanic service usually include?

Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Petrol mechanic to tune engines on 30ft boat

Cammeray NSW, Australia

31st Jan 2023

My mates and I have recently purchased a Mariner 30 - a 10 meter 1970s sports crusing with 2 x Chrysler LM318s (the marine version of LA318) and are looking for a mechanic to help us with the engines. The starboard engine has a stuck bendix gear in the starter as of yesterday. The port engine is overheating which we think is due to the carbie flooding. We’re looking for someone to take a look, confirm above and fix. Could you please quote price based on a call out, carbie tune and general service, then we can agree price for fixing the starter (and anything else required) once you’ve had a chance to assess. The engines are running new Quickfuel carbies - 650cfm square bore, electric choke, vacuum secondaries (same as Holley 4160). Ignition has been upgraded to a coil over HEI distributor with magnetic points. The previous owner is quite knowledgeable on the engines and the boat in general is available to give detailed history, current condition and recommendation for the engines. Cheers Patrick - Due date: Flexible

Mechanic to check out a boat trailer

Chatswood NSW 2067, Australia

26th Aug 2022

I need someone to inspect a boat trailer for us in Chatswood, NSW so that we are able to get a permit and drive it to QLD

We were about to purchase a trailer from marketplace. We live in Brisbane, so Talal offered to inspect and fix the trailer for us. He bent over backwards by speaking to us and the seller to do the inspection. With his knowledge and the photos that he sent, thank God we didn't purchase the trailer. Talal is a very down to earth guy with great communication
