Modded PS3 Repair

I have a modded FAT PS3 and it is backwards compatible running PS2 and PS1 games on a seperate chip. When I play PS3 games, it works pretty well, no issues. The issue - When I play PS2 games it overheats very quickly. I had a friend open it up, it was very clean, no dust and he repasted the cooling paste. But the PS2 games still cause it to get hot very quickly and I need to shut it down. He suggested replacing the chip. Are you able to help??
