Diagnose leaking pipe from upstairs bathroom

There is a leaking pipe from the bathroom upstairs causing water stains in the ceiling in the below room. We are not using the bathroom currently for this reason. We have got a plumber to check the issue and he found that the seal between the nut and the pipe was broken. He suggested cutting a rectangular hatch like vent in the ceiling below that can be opened and closed, which would providing ventilation and allowing access to the pipes from below room to carry out maintenance work. This would enable the work to be accomplished without redoing the whole bathroom. However that plumber is currently unavailable as he may be on holiday. As that plumber is currently away, I would like to get a diagnosis and way forward to this issue. I'll attach a picture of the ceiling.
