Top Arborist related questions
An arborist is a highly experienced and formally trained expert in tree health and vegetation management. Arborists review existing landscaping and gardens to determine whether any pests or diseases are present and whether there are risks to people or property. They also recommend methods for tree maintenance. They can also help proactively plan new gardens and ensure these adhere to development plans and meet community standards. A more specialised form of this trade is consulting arborists who handle more complex jobs related to planning and development, tree evaluations, legal disputes, and tree management plans.
An arborist will usually cost between $200 to $1,000. But this will depend on the size and complexity of the job - whether it’s a simple tree assessment or a comprehensive report. If you need to get a tree removed, expect rates for tree removal to fall within the range of $350 to $4,500.
An arborist frequently works with property owners who have trees that may be diseased or overrun by pests. They also help find solutions to problems like dead or dying branches that pose a falling risk, and trees that have grown too close to power lines.
An arborist can operate under supervision after completing a Certificate III in Arboriculture. However, any arborist providing specialised advice through arborist reports needs to have studied the Diploma of Aboriculture to meet the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 5. Be sure to check if the Tasker has the right qualifications, certifications, and industry experience to carry out the job you need.
An arborist report can take 7 to 10 days to complete due to the comprehensive nature of the report. Your arborist will use aerial and onsite inspections to assess tree health and identification, current and proposed safety concerns, and any factors that may affect potential removal.
An arborist inspects a tree and its surroundings for safety issues or evidence of pests and diseases. They develop solutions that consider future tree growth, as well as personal and property safety. A tree lopper usually considers space or safety issues with individual trees and trims or removes them as required.
Australia does not require a trade licence for arborists. However, for certain types of tasks, you may need to enquire as to what specialist licenses may be required to undertake your task as this can vary. Some areas are strict or have regulations about the types of trees that can be worked on. Please make sure that you confirm that a Tasker has the relevant licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

What do arborist services include?
Arborists are often referred to as tree surgeons because of the intricate nature of their work and their focus on tree health when making recommendations. Using their industry experience, they consider all proposed outcomes and best practices before offering solutions or methods that are suitable for the situation. Whether it's for tree maintenance or management, here are some of the common you can expect when hiring arborists in your area:
Arborist report
An arborist report is usually needed to support council applications and development plans. The report may inform you about the tree species, health, safe useful life expectancy, and arboricultural rating. You might be applying to the council for development approval (DA) or for approval to remove trees from your property. This is important because removing trees can’t be done without council approval!
Your arborist will check for pests and disease, any structural defects, and identify species of plants and trees present before writing their report. They’ll make written recommendations in the report, supported by photos and evidence. This will accompany your application and assist the council in its decision-making process. Consulting arborists may also use this report in case you need it for other purposes, such as dispute resolution or tree risk assessments.
Tree trimming, pruning & removal
Tree trimming and pruning are necessary to maintain the health and safety of many trees. An arborist makes sure your trees are pruned or maintained in a way that enables them to flourish and grow afterward. Trees may be trimmed or pruned for safety reasons, or to ensure their long-term viability. If a tree is diseased or dying, tree removal may be the only option. Your arborist consultant will consider all factors before making a recommendation for removal with your tree workers.
Annual tree inspection
An annual tree inspection is a proactive way to ensure the safety and longevity of the trees in your garden. Your arborist will thoroughly inspect trees and vegetation on your property to identify current and preventable concerns. They will then provide guidelines for maintenance or an action plan to rectify any problems, so your garden can continue to thrive. Keep in mind that tree inspections are different from arborist reports - the latter provides more thorough documentation on tree management and maintenance.
Garden mapping
Garden mapping can be used in any garden but it’s especially useful for heritage-listed gardens. Your arborist will prepare a catalog that identifies species types and locations for each tree or shrub in your garden. You might use mapping to help manage your garden or plan future landscaping changes.
