We’re looking for someone to help us design a simple, attractive and cost-efficient front garden for our home in Melbourne. The current garden is very bland and largely consists of approximately 70m² of lawn surrounded by hedges. Unfortunately, the lawn isn’t working particularly well — part of it gets very little sunlight and becomes mossy/dead, and we also have recurring mushrooms. There is also a well-worn path across the lawn from the front gate to the front door. We’d like someone to look at the garden as a whole and help us develop a practical design that makes better use of the space, rather than simply replacing the grass. We’re open to different ideas, including fake grass, paved areas, pools etc, pending cost. There are also some uneven steps and a front porch area that we may look to re-level/re-tile, so ideally the design would consider how these areas connect with the garden. We’re particularly interested in someone who can think creatively about how to get the biggest visual and functional improvement for the lowest reasonable cost. Happy to work with a landscape design student, recent graduate or someone earlier in their career with a good eye for design. Please include examples of previous garden/landscape design work and what you would provide as part of the job.

The work includes: * Remove or scrape back existing clay soil as necessary to achieve the required finished level. * Level and prepare the existing ground so that turf underlay/topsoil can be placed over it. * Supply and spread approximately 40 mm depth of suitable turf underlay/topsoil across the area. Approximately 2 m³ is theoretically required; allow around 2 to 2.5 m³ for settlement, levelling and minor wastage. * Use the turf underlay to fill minor low or uneven areas and achieve a smooth, even finished surface. * Grade the area appropriately to provide good surface drainage and prevent water pooling. * Lightly compact and prepare the turf underlay to provide a firm and even base. * Supply and install approximately 45–48 m² of budget-friendly turf, allowing a small amount for cutting and wastage. * Lay the turf tightly with neat joints and properly trimmed edges. * Lightly roll or press the turf after installation to ensure good contact between the turf and soil. * Thoroughly water the turf immediately after installation. * Remove and dispose of excess soil, turf offcuts and waste generated from the work. * Leave the work area clean and tidy upon completion. Preference: Looking for a practical, budget-friendly solution rather than premium turf. Wintergreen Couch or another economical turf suitable for a sunny area is acceptable.
