Steps:

1. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently dislodge dust and grime from your window sill. Make sure you have a bucket underneath to catch the dust.

2. Mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid and warm water. Then, pour your cleaning solution into a spray bottle. See some large stains on your window sill? Add a bit of baking soda to your solution.

3. Spray your cleaning solution on a microfibre cloth—not the window sill itself, as it can damage the paint—until the cloth is damp.

4. Gently wipe the window sill and frame. If the stains are still there, wipe a bit harder. Add more cleaning solution to the cloth if it’s starting to dry.

5. Wipe the window sill again with a dry and clean microfibre cloth.

6. Apply a light layer of floor wax to prevent future dirt from building up and staining your window sill.

How to clean window runners or tracks

Even if you never open your windows, microscopic dirt, dust, and bugs will still find a way to get into your windows and stay in your window runners. It’s better to regularly clean them since packed layers of grime can be harder to remove later.

Window track cleaning tools you’ll need:

• A small vacuum with a narrow nozzle

• Butter knife or plastic putty knife

• Microfibre cloths

• White vinegar

• Water

• Spray bottle

• Baking soda

• Dry lubricant or a candle

• Toothbrush (optional)

Steps:

Before cleaning window tracks, ensure you’ve already finished cleaning your windows, as you don’t want more muck to end up in the tracks. 

1. Open your windows as wide as possible and remove any window screens, if applicable. 

2. Grab your vacuum with a narrow nozzle and start suctioning out all that dirt from your window tracks. Remember to thoroughly go through every nook and cranny!

3. Sprinkle a light layer of baking soda. Ensure there are no large clumps or piles of baking soda anywhere.

4. Mix equal parts of water and white vinegar and put it in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the baking soda until it looks saturated. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

5. Wrap a microfibre cloth around a small butter knife, and start wiping the solution off in one steady motion. The gunk should easily come off!

6. Spray more of your DIY cleaning solution if some areas are harder to clean. Let the solution sit, and use a toothbrush to gently dislodge the dirt. 

7. If needed, do a final spray with the solution and wipe it down with your clean microfibre-and-butter-knife tool. 

8. If you find it’s still hard to open and close your windows even after cleaning the tracks, a little lubricant can help them glide as new. Apply a bit of dry lubricant or a candle to lubricate your window tracks. Then, operate the window several times to warm it up and spread it over the track.

How to keep window sills and tracks clean

1. Dust your window sill weekly or every two weeks to prevent dirt from building up.

2. Dedicate a few minutes weekly to vacuum your window tracks and check if any mould is growing on them or on your window sill.

3. Check your windows regularly for any leaks, moisture, or other issues to prevent the growth and spread of mould.
