Top Timber Flooring related questions

When requesting quotes for hardwood timber flooring, you'll typically receive prices either by the square metre or for the entire job. Regardless of the format, the cost will depend on the type and grade of timber you select. Prices can range from $50 per square metre for low-grade timber to more than $150 per square metre for higher-grade timber. Take note that these prices are indicative and may vary depending on factors such as the size of the area, the complexity of the job and any additional services required for the installation. For a more accurate estimation, request a detailed quote before accepting an offer from a Tasker.

For non-installation services like timber floor polish and restoration, you can also directly enquire to your chosen Tasker for a comprehensive breakdown of the pricing.

Typically, preparing the area before installation can span up to a week, during which the boards are left open in the room where they’ll be laid. The installation process generally requires around one to three days, depending on the complexity of the area. Finally, the timber floor polish and cleanup may extend the timeline by one or two more days. Overall, you can expect the service to run for roughly two weeks. For a more precise approximation, consult your Tasker about the duration of the service.

In Australia, licence requirements for timber flooring installation vary by state. Some states like Queensland mandate a floor finishing licence for jobs above $3,300. On the other hand, others like New South Wales don't require a licence for most timber floors. However, a carpentry licence might be necessary for load-bearing timber floors.

To be safe, always check the licencing requirements with your state's building commission or fair trading department before starting any timber flooring work. Also, confirm with a Tasker whether they have the relevant timber flooring licence and insurance before accepting an offer.

There are two main types of timber flooring: plank floorboards, made from hard or soft woods, and engineered floorboards, which use a combination of woods to create a stronger surface. You can also achieve a timber-like appearance with floating floorboards made from laminate, cork or bamboo.

The ideal flooring for your home depends on where it will be installed. Engineered flooring is the perfect choice for high-moisture areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Since it has a layered construction, engineered flooring has the flexion to handle moisture better than solid hardwood. It also performs well on concrete subfloors. On the other hand, solid hardwood has superior aesthetic value and exceptional durability. It is a great option for drier areas like living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms, but may require more maintenance in high-traffic zones. Regardless of the material you choose, keep your floors looking their best by regularly enlisting the help of a timber floor polisher.

Compared to other options like tiles and carpets, wood flooring is more susceptible to damage from everyday activities such as walking in high heels, moving furniture around or dropping heavy items. However, these minor dents and scratches can usually be easily sanded away. In fact, timber floors are more durable than vinyl and laminates, which show wear and tear more readily.

Before your floors are installed, try to empty the room completely. This includes removing drapes, blinds, pictures, and all furniture. If you need assistance moving furniture out of your home, especially if heavy lifting is required, consider getting a Tasker to do it for you.

Also, prepare an outdoor area where floorboard installers can work, equipped with electricity and lighting and easy access to the house.

What does a timber floor installation service include?

Flooring experts are equipped to elevate the charm of your home, handling everything from floorboard installation to repairs and polishing. When you book a service on Airtasker, you can expect the following:

Floorboard selection

If you're still pondering which floorboards to select for your home, you can count on your Tasker to offer advice on what to get. The options are extensive and can often be overwhelming, particularly if you're pressed for time to conduct thorough research. Your Tasker is the best person to solicit recommendations from as they can easily tailor them to your requirements.

Area preparation

Before the new boards get laid out, it’s crucial to prepare the area by drying, cleaning and checking the stability of the underlying floor. The steps for preparation depend on the materials used for your subfloor and the floorboards to be installed. All skirting boards, doors and door frames should also be removed at this stage. Finally, to prevent warping and shrinkage, timber floorboards require acclimatisation to adjust to the room’s temperature and moisture levels.

Timber flooring installation

This stage begins with your installer laying your choice of moisture-proofing and insulation materials. Insulation helps reduce noise and regulate the house’s temperature. Once the underlay is in place, the new boards will be installed. The method of installation varies with the materials chosen: solid timber floors need a substructure, whereas engineered boards can be laid directly over tiles, concrete or other wooden boards. For the best visual effect, boards are usually installed parallel to the longest length of the room or perpendicular to the front door.

The installer will then plan the layout for an even distribution of the timber. They will glue or nail your floorboards in place, allowing for a small gap around the perimeter for expansion. This gap will later be covered using skirting boards.

Cutting and shaping

Once most of the floor is laid, the installer will carefully measure, cut and fit smaller board sections around corners, cabinets and doorways for a seamless finish that blends with the overall design.

Timber floor polish and coating

If you’ve chosen solid floorboards, Taskers may need to sand them to remove any scratches or imperfections, then apply a high-quality polish to restore their shine. The final step is applying a protective coating to seal the wood to make it resistant to wear and tear. Timber floor wax polish and coat are important to maintain their beauty and durability, and it is recommended to get your floors serviced regularly to keep them fresh and prolong their lifespan.

Timber flooring repairs and restoration

Over time, wooden floors can be damaged by water, furniture, dirt or other everyday activities. Minor damage can often be fixed by refinishing the surface with light sanding, a new coat of sealant and polishing. For significant structural damage, a floor repair specialist may be needed to assess and correctly fix the problem.
