Brits hate doing these things at Christmas

And we spend HOW LONG getting ready?!

Brits hate doing these things at Christmas

Ah, Christmas. The bright lights, ice skating and Pret Christmas sandwiches are jolly, and the weather is officially fun until Dec 31st. Travel restrictions are being eased so that everyone can visit their families. Surprisingly, 60% of Brits don’t mind spending the holidays in lockdown. With the coronavirus lurking around, people are discouraged from drinking at a pub, then visiting their grandparents on the same day. That being said, it’s better to host an intimate dinner indoors with limited family members.

While people in the UK have more time to do all the holiday-related errands at home, it’s still not something everyone is looking forward to doing. Brits don’t have to fight through busy crowds to do the shopping, but there are still so many things to organize for a quiet family dinner. This includes planning a menu for the in-laws and wrapping all those presents (not to mention the pile of dishes towering from the sink).

We did some research and found out what Brits hate doing at Christmas, along with recommendations to make the holidays less of a chore:

These are the top 5 things we’d rather leave off the list:

UK top 5 most hated Christmas tasks | Airtasker

42% of us would happily pay for someone to do the dishes after the Christmas feast! And it’s not just the clean up that takes time.

If you’re already knee-deep in Christmas-related tasks you’re not alone. Our study revealed that the average Brit spends 36 hours, or the equivalent of a full-time working week, getting ready for Christmas.

Over half of us (53%) spend over 3 hours just doing the food shopping, and that doesn’t include the cooking!

Nearly 1 in 10 people expect to spend over half of Christmas Day in the kitchen.

These 5 Christmas tasks are the most time consuming:

And we all know the chores don’t stop once the festivities are over. 37% of Brits would rather pay someone to take down the decorations!

Turns out that where we live impacts how much time we spend on Christmas too.

People in these cities will be spending the most time getting ready for Christmas:

UK cities that spend the most time on Christmas tasks | Airtasker

People in Nottingham are spending more than any other city on festive chores, with well over a full working week invested in the big day (42 hours).

Nottingham residents admit they spend over 3 and a half hours travelling to see family and friends, over three hours in the Christmas food shop and nearly seven hours shopping for presents.

Homes in Newcastle are expected to spend the least amount of time on Christmas-related tasks with just over 27 hours accumulated on the preparation and chores involved.

And although Geordies are known for being particularly warm and friendly, cutting time on tasks such as writing greeting cards and visiting friends and family means they’re set to save nearly two working days worth of chores compared to those in Nottingham.

Londoners are either the more efficient, or more Grinch-y, spending on average 38 hours getting ready for Christmas.

Tasker Stories: Marco

'Airtasker has enabled me to pick up and learn skills I didn't have before'

Tasker Stories: Marco

After falling out of love with the banking industry 5 years ago, Marco turned his attention to a number of other projects to keep him busy, including consulting, running sport community events and even the odd stint as a private chef.

“I didn’t enjoy working full time in the banking industry with the same people day in and day out. I wanted to meet people with all different types of energy and from all parts of the world too – which was one of the main the reasons why I joined Airtasker.”

Marco’s varied skill set means he is able to accept all sorts of tasks on the platform, ranging from cleaning jobs or translating documents, to the slightly quirkier too…

“My most memorable moment on Airtasker has to be accepting a ‘paid-to-swipe’ task for someone looking for help with Tinder! That, and helping organise a ‘salsa dancing marketing activation’ in Shoreditch. It’s been really varied.”

Varied indeed! But with a 100% completion rate and five-star reviews across the board, what is his secret to Airtasker success?

“Invest time into building your user reviews. Be clear up front on all the information you need before accepting the job, then be honest and polite when completing – it’s really that easy!”

Airtasker isn’t Marco’s main source of income or his primary time commitment either – instead, he’s using the site to learn more skills, and also to give him flexibility to support his other ventures too.

“What difference has Airtasker made to my life? Well alongside giving me the confidence to manage different types of projects at the same time, it’s also enabled me to pick up and learn skills I didn’t have before.”

And finally, would he change anything about Airtasker?

“hmm, no not really. Oh, actually – maybe the fee!”

Which was especially great timing, as the day we interviewed Marco was also the day we announced our fee change for all Taskers.

Coincidence?

(Yes actually, it was).

Tasker Stories: Inez

"I went from earning nothing to nearly £2,500 in the last month alone"

Tasker Stories: Inez

Formerly a judo school owner and teacher (…not to mention a member of the Jamaican national judo team!), a sudden shoulder injury meant that Inez had to find an alternative means of income for her and her daughter after two months of being unable to work.

So after a quick Google of ways to earn extra cash – she found Airtasker!

“I’ve only been with Airtasker for just over a month, but have already completed around 12 to 13 tasks. When I first found the site I wasn’t too sure what it was all about, but thought ‘why not give it a go’ – and I’m so glad I did!”

And we’re glad too; though new to Airtasker, Inez has managed a perfect 5-star review rating to date! As for main types of tasks, it’s predominantly cleaning – however she’s completed a few more unusual ones too…

“My most memorable moment on Airtasker has to be my first task, which was priced at £1000 and was essentially an outlandish attempt from a guy trying to win back his girlfriend. The task included setting up a flower-style stunt and helping with hand-written notes. Safe to say it was an interesting one to start on!”

(Interesting is the right word! We won’t divulge whether or not it worked…)

One of things we hear most from our Taskers is the impact a flexible set-up has on their enjoyment of their work – and Inez is already seeing the benefits.

“What difference has Airtasker made to my life? To be honest, it’s made it so much less stressful – I went from earning nothing to nearly £2,500 in the last month alone – and the work I was doing before was nowhere near as interesting, or as friendly either!”

And the killer question; would she recommend Airtasker?

“I’d definitely recommend Airtasker to anyone looking for a more flexible way of working. Not only has it made a big difference in the last few months, it’s also inspired me to start my own business to sit alongside the work I do on Airtasker – and I’m currently in the process of setting up my own cleaning business.”

Go, Inez!

Tasker Stories: Elbin

"Airtasker gives me peace of mind that I’m in control"

Tasker Stories: Elbin

After an initial career in hotel hospitality, Elbin was in search of a different way of working, one that allowed him to make time for other important things in his life too.

“I found working in an office depressing, and at times, toxic – with no time to pursue my real passions outside of work. I turned to Airtasker as means to give me flexibility, and also, to get me out and about too. I earn the same amount as before, working less hours – but I do have to travel a lot more!”

In fact, Elbin’s unique skillset lends itself well to any hands-on job where he’s tasked with fixing or creating something.

“The main type of tasks I accept are handyman or furniture assembly-type jobs; I’m actually wanting to train as a designer and currently make installations and sculptures from wood – so it’s something I’m confident doing.”

Which also is his main driving force for accepting work on Airtasker too – as a means to take on his next step…

“Though I can’t afford to go to uni just yet, I’m using Airtasker to cover my financial responsibilities while I build up my portfolio. I’ve made a few real friends from completing tasks on Airtasker too, one of which was a former veteran and art exhibitor, who has given me lots of advice on how to move forward with my creations – he’s been a great connection to make”

Thanks to his user reviews and can-do attitude, Elbin is one of our most successful Taskers. So what’s his top tip for winning more work on Airtasker?

“Lots of people seem to miss the important information. Make sure you give full details specific to the task, not just a general copy and paste – letting them know you have the specific skills and tools to be able to complete the task.”

And there you have it. Thanks, Elbin!

Tasker Stories: Waz

"I was saving for a last minute trip to Ibiza and I had 30 days to make the money - the work I did on Airtasker made that happen"

Tasker Stories: Waz

After a major job change earlier this year, Waz made a start on a new career path. Around the same time he also signed up to Airtasker, with a specific goal and target in sight…

“I actually found Airtasker after searching online for how to make extra money – I was saving for a last minute trip to Ibiza and I had 30 days to make the money – the work I did on Airtasker made that happen!”

If that’s not an incentive we don’t know what is!

Tasker Stories: Waz

Though Waz isn’t formally trained in any specific trade, he is pretty handy when it comes to assembly and odd-jobs around the house – which has paid off for the type of work he completes with Airtasker.

“I mainly pick up furniture assembly tasks, with the odd removals or handyman-type job too – nothing too intrusive; I’m trying to focus on furniture assembly a lot more. I haven’t been on the site long but I’ve already done nearly 90 jobs, so it’s been busy”.

Sounds it! Post-Ibiza goals, Waz is now looking to pay off his car, and save for a house too. He also reflected on the impact Airtasker has had on his life.

“It’s kept me very busy. It’s made me re-think my priorities in life: where I am for my age, where I want to be, what I want to do – it’s shuffled that all around. It’s given me a new level of maturity too – I’m choosing to work instead of wasting money going out. I’d rather work towards my other goals.”

Wise words indeed. And his top tips for new Taskers?

“Commit to what you say you’re going to do. Ask questions – be upfront with the information before you accept, that’s an important one. My top tip would be to not mis-sell yourself – just accept the jobs you know you can do confidently and you can’t go wrong. Oh, and use the portfolio image library on your profile!”

Sound advice.

Thanks, Waz!

Tasker Stories: Chris

"It’s made me feel 18 again, like when I started my first business"

Tasker Stories: Chris

After selling his business and retiring at the sprightly age of 46, Chris was recommended to get involved with Airtasker by a friend, who said it’d be a great thing to keep him busy – and if the amount of jobs he’s accepted on the site are anything to go by, it looks like he’s been pretty busy ever since!

“I’m a qualified plumber and electrician, I do all sorts of different jobs. Mainly plumbing jobs on Airtasker though – I’ve got more than 30 years experience.”

Tasker Stories: Chris

Though Chris takes on plenty of work outside of Airtasker, we were keen to know the impact joining the site has had (if any!).

“It’s made me feel 18 again, like when I started my first business. I used to have 35 people working for me, but I found it stressful managing that amount of heads – it’s nice to just be responsible for myself. My mantra is that for every person I help, someone else isn’t ripping them off.”

Chris has also built up an impressive arsenal of 5-star user reviews (158 at the time of writing) – making him one of the most successful (review-wise) Taskers we have on the site. What are his tips for Airtasker success?

“Don’t put in for jobs you can’t do – and don’t undervalue the reviews, they’re really important. Every person I’ve been to in the last three months has commented on how good my reviews are, so make sure you do the job well and you’re professional when you’re there – it’ll pay off later.”

And there you have it.

Thanks, Chris!

Tasker Stories: Fais

"Babies are expensive! Airtasker provides a great extra revenue stream for my family".

Tasker Stories: Fais

Fais is a busy Tasker who uses Airtasker to supplement his income on-top of his full time job in West London. Like many Taskers on the site, he found us after looking for ways to earn extra money utilising skills he already had.

“I used to do a lot manual labour working with my Dad, but after him retiring and passing away soon after, I needed to find a way to earn extra income. My full-time job is at a desk, so Airtasker is also a great way for me to get plenty of physical exercise too! The main types of tasks I accept are decorating, handyman-type jobs, carpentry, furniture assembly – basically anything that I’m comfortable with that isn’t too technical.”

Tasker Stories: Fais

We then asked Fais about the impact, if any, Airtasker has had on his life.

“Airtasker has made a massive difference to me. Unfortunately after my Dad passed the family inherited some debts that I had to look after for not just myself and my wife, but for my Mum and sister too – because of the work I took on it meant I could help with that. On top of that, my wife is also seven months pregnant – so it’s been helpful paying off a few things and working as much as possible this side of the pregnancy. I’ve been reading a lot of blogs and babies are expensive! Airtasker provides a great extra revenue stream for my family.

And he’s been busy! Fais has been working around the clock, and as we write this, currently has a perfect five-star rating and a 100% completion rate. We asked him what advice he’d give to new Taskers.

“My top tip for Taskers would be to stand out by making yourself look as professional as possible. When I’m applying for a job I give all the information necessary: my experience, my tools, how long I think it’ll take me etc, whereas I see other people respond halfheartedly with ‘yeah I can do that’, and it just doesn’t work like that – people need to have that initial trust in your professionalism.”

Solid advice.

We salute you, Fais! What a gent.

Tasker Stories: Marius

"I like the control Airtasker gives me, and how only I’m responsible for the amount of work I accept"

Tasker Stories: Marius

We caught up with one of our Taskers, Marius – who has been with Airtasker for around 6 months, and on top of the work he accepts via the site, also works as a driver and on other projects too.

“I’m really open to the type of jobs I accept on Airtasker; I like to keep it varied so I take on gardening, handyman tasks, furniture assembly and even removal jobs. It really all depends on how it fits in with my time schedule outside of the work I do with Airtasker.”

Tasker Stories: Marius

That certainly keeps it varied – but what’s the rationale behind casting the net so wide with the different types of tasks?

“Taking on all types of jobs has meant I’ve learned a whole load of extra skills. It’s also been great for learning how to better interact with people, and how to manage my time balancing the different projects I’m involved with. I like the control Airtasker gives me, and how only I’m responsible for the amount of work I accept.”

We asked Marius if he’s noticed any difference in his life since joining Airtasker – and one of the differences, was the potential impact it’s going to have on his future plans:

“The main change Airtasker has made for me is it’s given me the confidence to start my own business in the future. I have a lot of skills outside of the things I do on Airtasker, and I’d love to explore those further.”

User reviews are of course an important thing for Taskers looking to find work on the site, and Marius likes that it’s a requirement for both sides of the marketplace.

“I like the fact that both sides leave a review; it means that everyone is responsible and everyone is encouraged to be professional, too.”

And finally, his top tips for Airtasker success are short and sweet:

‘Just enjoy it! And be honest too.”

Which is a solid piece of advice you could apply to just about anything.

Tasker Stories: Eddie

"I’m an adventurous person, and I like to try different things - which is the appeal of Airtasker for me"

Tasker Stories: Eddie

We caught up with one of our Taskers, Eddie, who after a career as a teacher and a stint in healthcare, decided that he needed a change of pace. Among a few other new projects – one being a personal assistant role for an elderly gentleman – he found Airtasker.

“I’m an adventurous person, and I like to try different things – which is the appeal of Airtasker for me. I get fed up sitting in the same place all day, so I knew I needed something physical work-wise, and cleaning and gardening seemed like a perfect fit. On top of that, meeting new people in my local community is something I love doing.”

Eddie: Tasker Stories

Though Eddie’s only been signed up to Airtasker a few months, he’s already completed more than 50 jobs -and he’s seeing some unexpected benefits too.

“It’s actually made me a lot better physically. My GP was really surprised when he took my blood pressure; he asked me if I’d been doing a lot of exercise – when I told him about the cleaning, he said the physical activity had really helped me improve. It must be all those stairs I’m climbing – much better than a workout at the gym!”

Ultimately though, it comes to down to control of his own time and flexibility to define the type of work he’s doing.

“It’s a win-win for me. My health is improving, I’m earning money and I’m even making a few friends in the process. The flexibility is a big driver for me; I work if I want to work, and I only make an offer on the jobs I actually want to take – it’s very different to my previous roles.”

His top tips for finding work on Airtasker?

“Just be honest. To work out if you can actually do the job – get all the information upfront. Be on time, be professional – and be friendly! I’ve met loads of interesting people on Airtasker, and the key is in the conversation.”

Sound advice if ever we heard it. Thanks, Eddie!

Task of the month: Genealogy

This Poster is using Airtasker to track down his biological father.

Task of the month: Genealogy

Whether it’s cleaning or gardening, babysitting dachshunds or songwriting – the breadth of tasks we see posted on Airtasker is genuinely massive. But from time to time, we see a task that really reminds us just how creative – and how powerful – the platform can be.

Like, sayyyyyy, this one:

Genealogy Task

Posted over on our Australian site, Steve W called out for someone to help find his biological father in the UK – with just his name, age and place of birth as starting info. Soon after posting, a genealogist Tasker on the site contacted Steven and is now working towards hopefully tracking down his Dad – all the way from Australia.

Here’s hoping they’re successful!

*We’ve contacted Steven to see if we can help in any way and if he’d like to share any updates on the task.

Introducing: Awesome Deeds

Let us know what's on your neighbourhood's to-do list.

Introducing: Awesome Deeds

Airtasker was born from a simple idea: we all have jobs we need doing, and others have the skills (and time) to complete them.

For that idea and process to work though, a huge part of our efforts are focussed on connecting local communities. So with that in mind, we’ve launched our Awesome Deeds initiative to connect even more people than ever before – all while doing a bit of good in the process.

What can we do in your community?

Whether it’s cleaning, repair, building or perhaps just some well overdue odd-jobs – we have Taskers with the right skills ready to help on any type of job or task. And better yet – we’ll pay for the work to be carried out too.

We’re looking to hear from you on local community projects, neighbourhood jobs and local tasks that need doing – then once we have that info, we can organise someone in the locality to help with the work.

Whatever the task, fill out this form with the specifications – and one of our team will get back to you.

#AwesomeDeeds

Please note: We’re currently focussed on London-based tasks and communities, though this is subject to change in the future. This campaign is only available for jobs in public places and not private homes.
