What does wedding photography include?
To get the wedding photography you want, it’s important to look carefully at the service offered. Each photographer has their own way of working. You might find differences in the length of time bookings last, the number of photos you get, and the editing process. Here’s what you may experience when researching and booking a local wedding photographer:
Consultation and engagement shoot
To get the best photos on your special day, your photographer might arrange a meeting or call, or even an engagement shoot. This is an opportunity to get used to each other, share ideas about the type of photos you want (so you can create a shot list) and practice some poses. Your photographer will also need details about your venue, the day’s running order (so they can plan on being in the best position at all the right moments), and details for the family and bridal party shots.
On the day wedding photography
Booking your wedding photographer (or photographers) for the entire day will mean they’ll begin capturing key moments in the hours before your ceremony. They may shoot you getting your hair and makeup done, dressing for the occasion, and capture images of your accessories such as your shoes, bouquet and jewellery. They may also do a “first look” shoot of the bride and groom or photos of the bride and groom with their wedding parties and family members before the ceremony. Of course, you don’t have to have this. You may only want your wedding photographer to shoot from the ceremony onwards, and that’s okay, too.
Wedding shoot
After the service, your photographer will ask you and your partner to leave your guests for a short while so they can take photos of just the two of you. This is your official wedding photoshoot. Before calling you away, your photographer will have scoped out the most picture-perfect locations around your venue (taking lighting and backdrops into consideration) and will lead you there for your photos (whether you walk or drive). Once they have the photos they want, you’ll rejoin friends and family for any group shots. Depending on how many hours you’ve booked your photographer for, they’ll remain at the celebrations to capture all the special moments throughout the speeches, meal, and reception.
Photo editing and delivery
Most wedding photography services include photo editing and retouching. The number of edited images you get depends on the package offered by your photographer. Editing involves enhancements like colour balancing, adding effects, and touching up the image so it’s picture-perfect. Photos are delivered using a secure online gallery, on a USB, or sometimes both. Once you get your photos back you might also ask your photographer about other services such as custom album printing, canvas printing, or getting digital prints.
Why booking a local wedding photographer near you can matter
Lower travel costs. A photographer based near your venue is less likely to charge travel or accommodation fees, especially for long days that finish late.
They know the venue. A local wedding photographer who has worked at your venue before knows where the light is best at different times of day, the backup spots if it rains, and the venue’s rules on where photographers can stand.
Easier planning. Meeting beforehand, or booking an engagement shoot, is simpler when you’re nearby.
That said, style matters most. If you love a photographer’s work and they’re further away, ask for their travel costs upfront and compare the total with local offers. If you’d like video as well, a wedding videographer based in the same area can often coordinate with your photographer.

We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer for our wedding. Jijo did an amazing job making everyone feel comfortable and relaxed, while also taking the time to accommodate all of our portrait requests. Looking for a photographer for our low key wedding ceremony and reception in Williamstown, 3016. Approximately 45 guests. The wedding is on Saturday 18 October. Photographer required for approximately 2.5 hours from 11.30am to 2.00pm. Ceremony will take place in Williamstown Botanic Gardens at midday followed by reception lunch in nearby restaurant at 1pm (5 minute walk). Only require access to digital photos after the event. This will be a relaxed and informal event and we would like the photographer to capture a mixture of posed and natural photographs as well as key moments during the ceremony. We welcome student photographers and those that are still building their portfolios in order to stay within budget. Please include examples of / links to your work if possible.
We engaged Lexi to take our wedding photos and we are so happy with the result. Lexi was so easy to work with and she captured so many beautiful moments on the day. We highly recommend Lexi for any sort of event photography.
