As a Diesel/Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, my main responsibility is to inspect, diagnose, repair and maintain heavy vehicles to ensure they are safe, reliable and fit for operation. I carry out scheduled servicing, preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on trucks, trailers and other heavy transport equipment. My daily tasks include conducting inspections and identifying mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults using diagnostic equipment, manuals and my technical knowledge. I service and repair engines, transmissions, differentials, braking systems, steering and suspension systems, cooling systems, fuel systems and other vehicle components. I replace worn or damaged parts and carry out repairs according to manufacturer specifications and workplace safety procedures. I also perform engine and drivetrain repairs, brake repairs, clutch repairs, wheel-end and hub repairs, suspension component replacement, electrical fault finding and general mechanical maintenance. I inspect vehicles before and after repairs and conduct testing to ensure all components are operating correctly. I use a wide range of hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, lifting equipment and specialised workshop machinery. I maintain accurate service and repair records and report any major faults or safety issues to supervisors or management. Safety is an important part of my role. I follow workplace health and safety procedures, use appropriate personal protective equipment, correctly isolate vehicles and equipment before repairs, and ensure the work area is kept clean and safe. I work independently as well as with other mechanics and workshop staff. I manage multiple repair jobs, prioritise urgent safety-related issues and complete work within required timeframes. My overall responsibility is to keep heavy vehicles mechanically safe, roadworthy and reliable while maintaining a high standard of workmanship.
