Top Deck Staining related questions

No, this isn’t necessary as Taskers who do deck staining already have the required tools and equipment to do the job. They also have the requisite skills and years - sometimes decades of experience in applying deck staining. What you should provide are the bottles or tubs of deck stain you want used. If you don’t have these on hand yet, some Taskers can buy these for you for a small extra fee.

The service can take at least a day to at most five days to complete. The time needed depends on your deck's size, if your deck needs repairs, and if the weather is right to allow drying after a pressure wash and after staining. We suggest you let your Tasker inspect your deck so they can give you a better estimate of how much time they need to finish the job.

Both materials can protect new and old decks from moisture damage and wear-and-tear but differ in application and cost. Deck stains cost less and don’t need a primer. The paint must have a primer applied then finished with a coat of polyurethane sealant. Deck stains don’t cover the natural grain and small cracks on the wood for a natural-looking finish. Either method works to protect your deck - choosing one over the other depends on your preference and budget.

The good old brush is best, as brushing works the stain into the wood grain and provides a deep-penetrating seal to block out moisture. Rollers are an excellent second choice when you want to work fast. Sprayers are also another option, but you have to use them at low pressure and spray close to the surface. The common drawback with rollers and sprayers is that they can’t get into hard-to-reach areas, which are no problem when using a brush.

What do deck staining services include?

Deck staining services include all the activities necessary to give your deck a protective layer against moisture, weather damage and everyday wear and tear. This service can also give your deck more aesthetic appeal, as deck staining offers you a variety of colours to highlight the texture and wood grain. The service can include inspecting the deck, cleaning and preparing the deck for staining, applying the stain and then allowing it to dry.

Inspecting the deck

Your hired deck staining specialist checks the deck for any damage or imperfections. Should any sections or areas of your deck have cracks, splits or any damage, you may have to hire someone to repair it before staining. Your Tasker can also check each board and joist for wear and recommend the appropriate repairs if the damage is severe. If the deck is in good shape, they can proceed with preparing the deck for staining.

Preparing the deck

Preparing the deck includes giving it a thorough cleaning. This can consist of scraping off any dirt or debris built up in the spaces between planks and joists. Careful cleaning is necessary, so the stain completely bonds with the deck to protect it from the elements and doesn’t peel off.

They can apply a store-bought deck cleaner, then sweep the entire deck to remove any dust or debris on the walking surfaces. You can hire another service to give the deck a good washing down if sweeping isn’t enough, but you may have to allow the deck to dry for a couple of days. Some Taskers may recommend sanding down the entire deck after cleaning, but this can take more time and cost extra.

If there is any mould or mildew on any part of the deck, Taskers can apply the appropriate cleaning solution to remove them. Your specialist can also use masking tape to any walls or other surfaces close to your deck to prevent the staining from getting on them.

Staining the deck

After the deck is clean and free of any dirt or debris, your Tasker goes ahead with the deck staining or deck oiling. Your hired specialist can apply whatever type of staining you prefer, whether it’s transparent or semi-solid. They can apply the stain with a brush, roller or sprayer. They can follow the deck staining manufacturer’s directions and use one method or any combination of these to stain your deck.

Letting the stain dry

Before doing the staining, your hired deck staining specialist can check the weather report. The weather should be warm but not too sunny to apply and let your deck dry. If the sun is too harsh, the deck staining can dry in uneven blemishes and show brush marks. If requested, some specialists can put up tarps to shield the deck staining from direct sunlight as it dries.
