What do Timing Belt Replacement services include?

Replacing a timing belt is commonly not recommended for a DIY job. It requires extensive technical skills, the right tools, and parts, and could also take several hours to complete. Fortunately, you can always hire a mechanic from Airtasker, so you won't have to drive to the repair shop and wait for ages to get the job done! Here's what to expect:

Purchase of New Timing Belt

The new timing belt must be compatible with your car's model and engine. When purchasing, refer to your manufacturer's manual or compare it to your old one. If you're unsure, you can have your Tasker bring a suitable timing belt for your vehicle. They know the best brands that guarantee long-lasting durability and resiliency at the best price.

Disconnect and remove necessary parts

Before starting, the negative battery terminal must be disconnected and secured away from its battery post. Some necessary parts will also be removed such as the serpentine belt, hoses, cooling fan, alternator, and valve cover assembly to gain direct access to the old timing belt. Once done, it will expose the old timing belt, as well as the camshaft and crankshaft.

Timing masks

Your Tasker must then locate the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft to ensure proper alignment. This step will come in handy later on during the reinstallation process. Any misalignments should be addressed immediately before placing a new belt to avoid causing further issues in the long run.

Removing the timing belt

The bolts and screws that are holding the timing belt cover will be undone to release the tension and let the belt slip off the crankshaft sprocket. The crankshaft pulley will be then detached while keeping the crankshaft sprocket intact. Once settled, your Tasker will finally remove the timing belt from the vehicle.

Installing the timing belt

The camshaft sprocket must be aligned with the marks on the cylinder head. After then, the new timing belt will be reassembled and positioned around the crankshaft sprocket. A tensioner tool will help apply pressure on the belt to prevent a replacement that is too tight or too loose.

Reassembly

After installing, your Tasker will reinstall all previously removed parts. Feel free to go on a test drive to make sure that everything is working as it should be. If there are no problems, it means the replacement was a success!

I purchased a 2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser a year ago.. It has been working perfectly & serviced twice since with no issues, up until recently I noticed temp. Fluctuating, I took it to my mechanic & said it must be the thermostat in which was changed, it worked well I thought for 3 weeks & once again temperature rising & falling but no water loss in either radiator or reserve.. I took it baxcitingkto mechanic, says he did a pressure test for an hour & everything worked normal.. He says sounds like a cracked head.. Grrrr.. I went a chat line with people who have experienced exactly the same symptoms as mine, with many indicating to clips under raditor, timing belt & otgher various things, a few also were told the Head but was not. So do I need a Timing Belt, don't know! just want my car fixed without great expense. I owned a previous PT for 13 yrs & had no trouble with it... HELP!!!

Wanting someone to check my timing belt install and tighten up the belt tensioner before I put everything back together. 2007 Audi tfsi engine. I’ve got everything stripped down and the new timing belt on. Issue is, I made the error of using break cleaner to clean the area, and the paint I used for the bottom timing marks all but dissolved. I may be being pedantic, but I cranked the belt around a couple of times, and am not sure if Everything’s ok, or I’m a belt tooth off. I have all the tools needed.

Top bloke, top service.
