Top Vinyl Flooring related questions

While vinyl flooring is quite durable, it can be punctured easily. Something as simple as dragging a metal chair leg or dropping a kitchen knife can damage the surface. If this sort of activity is expected in your home, you might want to reconsider fitting your kitchen floors in vinyl. Still, it is much more durable compared to laminate flooring.

Yes, it is. Vinyl flooring feels colder and harder than laminate, making it a bit less ideal for your living area and bedrooms. But, it is more durable and water-resistant than laminate. Both vinyl and laminate flooring are relatively easy to install and maintain, and they come in a variety of designs to choose from. Feel free to book a consultation with a vinyl fitter near you to learn more about vinyl flooring.

Yes, it can be mopped. To start cleaning your vinyl floors, dry mop or vacuum them to remove any hair, dirt, or other debris. Then, sweep them using a vinyl cleaning solution or a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. You can also take stains out with a soft-bristled brush. If you have any questions about properly cleaning your flooring, consult a cleaning expert via Airtasker.

An easy way to do this is to avoid buying chairs or tables with wheels. You can also put rugs in high traffic areas, such as hallways or seating areas. You can try looking for felt tips to attach to each chair or table leg. Lastly, avoid dropping heavy objects on your vinyl floors. As vinyl floors will show wear and tear over the years, you must be prepared to redo or refit your floors if you plan to live in your home for a long time.

Yes! To install vinyl plank flooring, you’ll need pliers, a utility knife, hammer, nail set, carpenter’s square, straightedge, drawbar tool, fine-tooth saw, 1/4 inch spacers, and a tape measure. Start by planning the floor layout. Prepare the floor, test-fit the first row, then cut the planks to size. Connect the flooring planks, then cut and fit the final planks. If this seems too much for a DIY job, you can always contact a local vinyl fitter on our platform.

Unfortunately, vinyl isn’t very eco-friendly. First off, its main ingredient is petroleum, a non-renewable resource. Its production and installation process also produces chemicals like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and dioxins that affect both humans and animals exposed to it. Next, vinyl cannot be refinished, which means a lot of scrap vinyl. This cannot be reused, recycled, or composted.

What does a vinyl flooring fitting service include?

When you book a vinyl flooring fitting service on Airtasker, you get a Tasker who’ll come over with the complete set of tools for the job. You can have them shop for your desired vinyl planks or sheets, or you can opt to do this yourself.

In general, here’s what you can expect when you request a vinyl flooring service through Airtasker:

Installation materials and tools

Your tradesperson arrives at your location with all the necessary tools. These may include patching compound, pliers, a utility knife, hammer, nail set, carpenter’s square, putty knife, straightedge, drawbar tool, fine-tooth saw, 1/4 inch spacers, and a tape measure. If you haven’t purchased your vinyl planks or sheets yet, they can do this on your behalf as well.

Just make sure to specify what you want (or don’t want) in your task post, like “luxury vinyl flooring only” or “white or yellow vinyl flooring”. Expect your Tasker to coordinate with you during the buying process to avoid any miscommunication or wrong purchases.

Fitting the vinyl flooring

Once all the materials and tools are ready, your tradesperson starts fitting the vinyl flooring. First, they’ll plan the layout based on the most visible wall and going out towards the entryway. They’ll take some measurements and remove any trim or skirting boards.

Next, they’ll check the subfloor. Your vinyl fitter fills any holes or low-lying areas with patching compound and sands down any high points. Once the floor is ready, your tradesperson lays out the first row of planks and cuts off any excess. These smaller pieces can be used for vinyl flooring in your bathroom, wetroom, or a closet.

Finally, your tradesperson connects the planks and attaches them to the subfloor using an adhesive material. Then, you’re free to inspect the work. Once you’re happy with your new vinyl floors, your tradesperson reattaches any skirting or moulding. After this, you can clean up the room and move back your furniture. Or, you can get a Tasker to help you clean up the post-fitting debris and dust

Redoing vinyl floors

Vinyl flooring typically has a lifespan of around 20 years. Since they can’t be refinished, you’ll need to tear up the planks or sheets and have someone redo the floors. Should you choose to work with vinyl again, you can easily hire a tradesperson who’ll remove the old vinyl, refinish the subfloor, and fit the new flooring.

Want to redo your floors with tiling or wall-to-wall carpeting instead? You can book Taskers to do that, too.
