Top Wall Plastering related questions

There is no quick answer for this, as there are several types of plaster. The “best” plaster is one that offers you the best combination of durability, safety for your household members, aesthetic appeal and cost. Gypsum plaster is the least expensive option but isn’t very sturdy. Lime plaster is non-toxic, can regulate humidity in a space, is durable and natural but takes longer to apply and can cost more; spare yourself the hassle by hiring a Tasker!

That depends on the type of plaster, the complexity and scale of the job, and in some cases, the weather conditions. These can all impact how long the job takes. Some plasters need 1 to 2 layers, while others need 7 to 8 layers to complete. Note that each layer needs anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to dry before adding succeeding layers to finish. You can ask your Tasker for an exact estimate.

Most plasterers recommend that the plaster stops at 2.5 cm or an inch before reaching the floor. This is assuming your floor has no skirting or baseboards. There should be some allowance because if the plaster extends to the floor, this can dry the fastest and create unsightly trowel marks that won’t match the colour of the rest of the wall.

Plaster is the better choice, although it can take longer and cost more than drywall. Drywall isn’t as sturdy as plaster, and plaster has better qualities. Plaster can last longer as it is waterproof, doesn’t allow mould growth and some types of plaster are safe for people with allergies. Plaster can also make rooms and spaces look more aesthetically pleasing and thus add value to your home.

You can have the wiring installed before having your walls or ceilings plastered. Your electrician may do some rough work installing the wiring, switches and switch plates. The plasterer can mark these off and cover them with plastic, do the plastering then your electrician can come back to finish. If you have the plastering done first, your electrician will have to score plaster to fit wires, plugs and switches; then, your plasterer will have to do a lot of patch-up work.

It would help if you had the plumbing done before plastering - even before the wiring. Remember that it’s easier to bend wires or cables, but it’s more difficult to bend pipes! Your plumber must also test the water pressure and check for leaks. Doing the plumbing after the plastering means breaking plaster to access or mount pipes, and this can mean twice the work and cost of plastering.

What do wall plastering services include?

Wall plastering services include all the activities necessary to plaster walls or even do replastering on your walls. Your hired wall plasterer can ensure that the service is performed following building codes, industry best practices, and the relevant safety regulations.

This can include assessing and preparing the site, mixing the plaster, applying the plaster, and applying any finishes when necessary.

Site assessment

Your Tasker begins the service by inspecting the site. They can take measurements and take any fixtures and features of the site into account. This can help them determine how much material they need to use and how to optimise the prepared material and apply it in the correct thickness before it dries. If you don’t have the materials ready yet, some Taskers can buy them for you upon request.

Your Tasker may also check for any light fixtures and electrical sockets they may have to cover. If you want a newly built wall plastered, you may want to hire someone to finish the wiring before your Tasker begins plastering the wall.

Site preparation

Are your walls newly built or remodeled? Then you can get someone to do site cleanup. Your Tasker may cover the floor and cover any electrical sockets, light switches or other lighting fixtures with plastic or other protective material. As part of the preparation, you can also get someone to check that your pipes aren’t leaky and have enough water pressure so your Tasker can easily mix plaster later.

Plaster preparation

Once the site is ready, your Tasker proceeds to mix the plaster. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, they can mix the correct ratio of water, gypsum, lime, or whatever materials make up the type of plaster you want on your walls. They can make sure that the plaster mixture is of the right consistency before application.

Plaster application

If the plaster requires a lath to serve as an anchor for your plaster, some Taskers may install this upon request. You may need to hire a separate service to install the lath

Your Tasker can then plaster your walls once the plaster is mixed. They can apply as many layers as necessary, ensure complete coverage and apply the plaster in the right thickness. Depending on the plaster, your Tasker can leave the walls to dry for 24 to 48 hours in-between applications. They can continue the application and drying process until all the prescribed layers are on the walls.

Wall plastering finishes & repairs

Some types of plaster need a layer of wax, or special soap applied after the final layer has dried, and your Tasker may do this upon request. You can also call on your Tasker to do plaster wall repairs and repair holes in plaster walls or repair large holes in plaster walls. Once the last layer of plaster dries, why not hire someone to paint it?
