Top DJ related questions

If you want a reputable DJ to spin for your event, book them at least six months to a year in advance. Yes, in-demand DJs can get fully booked that quickly, so you may want to book them months in advance! Avoid putting off this booking, as it can be stressful to find a good DJ with enough experience and an excellent playlist in the weeks leading up to your event.

Yes! But don’t expect them to play the entire playlist. Your DJ Tasker’s job is to “read the crowd” and use songs in their playlist to get people to dance and enjoy your event. That also depends on how long your party lasts - you can only squeeze so much into a couple of hours of dancing. Don’t be surprised if your DJ creates a mixed playlist of your favourites and their playlist.

You don’t have to provide any equipment, but you can give them access to a sound system. You may have to install a sound system or make sure an existing system works well before your event. Prepare an area for a booth and a comfortable chair to use in between sets, along with a microphone. Don’t forget to provide snacks or a meal at your event.

Yes, with the right skills, equipment and experience. Spinning isn’t as easy as it looks. There’s a lot more to it than lining up songs, pushing buttons, turning knobs and flipping switches. A pro DJ knows how to make smooth transitions to avoid gaps, so the music plays non-stop. It’s all this and reading the crowd to play what appeals to them most.

A professional DJ should have a controller of some sort, along with a laptop loaded with DJ software and music. If they don’t use a controller, your DJ may be “old school” and use vinyl records or CDs and a pair of turntables. They should also have the requisite RCA cables, headphones and sometimes a couple of professional-grade speakers. It’s also crucial for a pro to have an extensive library of songs and albums.

What do DJ services include?

DJ services include all the activities necessary to provide professionally mixed music that you and your guests can enjoy dancing to at your event or establishment. This can include hiring a DJ for a party, a mobile DJ, or even one specifically for the disco venue. In some cases, your hired Tasker may also perform some hosting duties upon request.

Planning the playlist

When meeting with your DJ to discuss details of their performance, they can suggest a playlist composed of the appropriate tracks. If you want a retro theme for your event, your Tasker may offer to use a series of dance hits from the ‘80s and ‘90s. You can pick from their playlist and ask for your favourite songs to be included in the mix.

Discussing the event program

Apart from making the playlist, your Tasker can discuss your event program and do some hosting duties upon request. They can announce when parts of the program are about to begin, introduce guest speakers when appropriate, present guests, and inform guests when it’s time to hit the dance floor!

Be sure to share your guest list and inform your Tasker on how to pronounce any complicated names. Don’t forget to hire a cleaner for the venue after your event!

Playlist demonstration

Once you’ve agreed on a playlist, your Tasker can share a sample mix. They may send a physical copy via courier like a CD or USB drive or provide you with a link to download the files. This is helpful when the playlist may have songs you aren’t familiar with, and you’d like to hear how your Tasker makes transitions between songs.

You can comment and suggest any changes for the transitions, track length, mix length or song sequence.

Your Tasker can implement the changes within a reasonable amount of time, then share the revised cut. This process can repeat until both of you are satisfied with the final product. Your Tasker may ask to visit your venue so they can test and make sure their equipment is compatible with your sound system.

Performing at your event

You can expect your Tasker to arrive at the venue a reasonable time before your event starts. They can arrive early to set up their booth, get dressed in the appropriate outfit and connect their equipment to the venue’s sound system. If you contract them to do so, they can do hosting duties and signal the start of your event.

They may play a short track to introduce guests or guest speakers when appropriate. By the time your event closes, and it’s time for your guests to party, your Tasker can open the dance floor and proceed to mix songs. They can mix songs live and continue until the party officially ends as well. Feeling overwhelmed? For extra help in setting up the party, you can definitely hire separate Taskers.
