Top EMDR Therapy related questions

EMDR therapy is generally for people who have post-traumatic stress disorder, but it’s also used to treat different mental health conditions. You might find EMDR therapy useful if you have chronic pain, anxiety, unresolved grief, depression, phobias, panic disorders, or eating disorders. Talk to your Tasker about your condition and discuss whether you’re ready for EMDR therapy and if it’s the right one for you.

Because EMDR therapy involves reliving traumatic and disturbing events, you may experience physical or emotional discomfort during the treatment. You may recall memories you haven’t remembered for a long time or may experience unusual dreams shortly after your EMDR therapy session.

But remember that it’s not supposed to re-traumatise you and make you feel overwhelmed. It’s generally considered a safe form of therapy. But if you have side effects, feel free to talk about it with your Tasker.

The minimum qualifications you should pay attention to when finding an EMDR therapist are their credentials and work experience. On top of that, they should know how to explain the process to you to help you understand how EMDR works. You should be able to trust them because EMDR can bring up feelings of vulnerability. You must have a safe and trusting relationship with your EMDR therapist to make the process effective.

Generally, it takes at least 10 to 12 sessions to see the effects of EMDR therapy. But of course, like all kinds of treatment, the time it takes for EMDR therapy to work depends on your unique situation. Some people may notice the effects after a few sessions, but others with more traumatised backgrounds or certain diagnoses may take longer.

What do EMDR therapy services include?

EMDR therapy helps people who underwent traumatic and adverse life experiences. Your EMDR therapist helps you unblock your emotions, heal from the pain and fear, gain a new perspective, and enhance your personal beliefs about your capabilities. After all, taking care of your health and wellness also means relieving yourself from psychological trauma and distress. Here’s what you can expect from each phase of treatment:

History-taking and treatment planning

Here, you will talk about your entire history, distressing memories and experiences, as well as your current stressors. Based on that, you and your Tasker will work together to identify the possible targets for EMDR processing and develop a treatment plan. These targets can be the memories in your past or triggers in your present.

Preparation

In this phase, you will learn different techniques to help you deal with stress, anxiety and depression. These can be mental exercises, deep breathing, and mindfulness rituals. Your Tasker can make sure that you have the right skills and resources to manage your emotions and handle emotional distress, whether it’s during or between sessions.

Assessment and body scan

This phase activates the session’s target memory. You will visualise it in your head and describe how it makes you feel, physically and emotionally. Then, you will identify both a negative and a positive belief about yourself concerning that vivid visual image. Your Tasker will ask you to rate those beliefs based on how intense and authentic they are.

They will once again instruct you to focus on the image while simultaneously making you do eye movements, finger taps, and other movements. You will also be asked to observe how your body responds while thinking of the memories and the positive belief and identify any residual physical distress.

Closure and reevaluation

The closure phase includes a discussion of the positive steps that you’ve made so far. Your Tasker can ask you to keep a log that documents any related event that has happened to serve as a reminder of the self-calming activities and skills you’ve acquired and mastered in the preparation phase. Your Tasker will also give you valuable tips and information on how to keep them going daily.

The final phase involves examining and reevaluating the progress you’ve made so far. This includes your current psychological state, whether the desired effects have been maintained, and what memories have emerged. You and your Tasker will also determine if you need to work through the other targets you identified in the history-taking phase.

You will also identify the goals you want to achieve through EMDR therapy. But if you need help identifying your goals in other aspects of your life, getting a life coach can make it easier for you.
