Top Key Cutting related questions

Usually, yes, the locksmith may ask for an ID and proof that you own the property connected to that key. High-security keys, in particular, have registration and a unique serial number. The key cutter may ask to see these details before creating new keys. Communal keys (such as those used by an office or apartment block) are usually high-security, while your house keys are of the "normal" variety.

It depends on the complexity of your key. A standard key may take only a couple of minutes, while more complicated keys can take up to half an hour. If you're in a hurry to get new keys made (e.g. after a break-in), you can use Airtasker to find an available mobile key-cutting service to assist you. Doing so saves you from having to find a key cutter that's open even after work hours.

Keys with electronic parts (such as transponder car keys), Do Not Duplicate (DND) keys, and laser cut car keys are some of the types that cannot be duplicated. Others include VAT, chip, tubular, internal cut, and four-sided keys.

If you need an auto key cutting service for a transponder key, you'll need a locksmith to program the key for you..

In general, no. There are illegal duplicate keys, though, and these typically have a "Do Not Duplicate" (DND) note that informs locksmiths that they cannot make a copy of the key in question. Usually, only the manufacturer can cut new copies of these restricted keys.

Yes, they can keep a key to your property, but they do not have the right to enter whenever they want. Landlords are required to provide at least 24 hours' written notice before entering the tenant's property. And this agreement goes both ways - a tenant is not allowed to change the locks "without cause".

About to move to a new flat? You can use Airtasker to find local movers to help you out.

It is next to impossible to tell if a key has been copied or not. Some locksmiths might be able to tell, but this doesn't apply to all.

If you think that your property's security might be compromised through unauthorised key duplication, consider changing the locks and installing CCTVs around your area.

Locksmith Services

What do key cutting services include?

When you request a key cutting service through Airtasker, you can expect to work with an expert who can cut house, car, safe, and even security keys. While some Taskers may have you go to their shop, several may also offer mobile key-cutting services (meaning they'll bring their tools over to your location).

While the specifics may vary from Tasker to Tasker, here's what you can typically expect from a key cutting service:

Verifying ownership

The process starts with verifying your ownership of the property. Whether you're looking for house, office, or car key cutting, you can typically expect the locksmith to ask for proof that you live at that location or own that vehicle. If you're trying to duplicate high-security keys for offices or communal areas, you may also need to prove that the lock's serial number is registered under your name.

Key cutting (with an original)

It's best to have the original key on hand when getting a new key cut, as a copy of a duplicated key may not work as well.

To start cutting a new key, the Tasker takes a blank key (a flat metal blade) and runs it through a key cutting machine. This machine shapes the blade to make it match the original key.

Key cutting (without an original)

If the original key is lost, the locksmith may use a key code. This set of numbers dictates the placement of the pins inside the key cutting machine. It will then cut the keys based on this key code.

If you feel that your security is compromised, we recommend changing the locks instead of just getting a new key. You might also want to consider installing security measures, like CCTV.

Key cutting using a broken original

Sometimes, a key will snap or break while inside a lock or in your car's ignition. A skilled locksmith can retrieve these broken parts and use them as a basis for the new key. A nearby car key cutter may also offer mobile services, meaning they can head to your location, use the key cutting machine in their van, and provide you with a new set in less than an hour.

If you've damaged your door while trying to get your key out, you can use Airtasker to find a door repair specialist in minutes quickly.

Cutting security keys and restricted keys

Security keys, or patent-protected keys, usually need special authorisation before you can ask a Tasker to duplicate them. Sometimes, you'll need to contact the manufacturer of the lock & key since they are the only ones who can legally duplicate these restricted keys. If this is the case, a Tasker may be able to help by ordering a copy of the key on your behalf (as long as you have an authorisation letter).
