Get your shed organised with these fantastic storage ideas!

Sheds are often used as storage units for a miscellany of items that are either unused or only seldomly needed. They’re the ideal space for hiding away the unsightly clutter from the house but, unfortunately, are almost always left unorganised.

Use your home’s extra space by taking inspiration from these shed storage ideas.

Maximising storage space

There are many ways to maximise spaces, big and small. Sometimes it’s all about getting creative in how you arrange and organise your belongings. Instead of just using floor space, you can work with vertical builds like shelves, hooks, and pegboards.

1. Shelf space

One of the cardinal rules in creating effective storage is keeping things off the floor. Incorporating hooks and shelves are great ways to maximise small shed space.

2. Storage panels

Storage panels like pegboards are another alternative to organising smaller materials like tools and extra materials. The niftiest feature on pegboards is the customisable attachments like hooks, cups, and trays.

3. Secure storage

If you have more oversized items of value and want peace of mind knowing they’re safe, you can add secure storage cabinets you can lock. Not only does this help make the space look neater, but you’ll be able to keep the items safe.

4. Bike rack

If you’re a biker, you can also use the shed as storage space for your bike. Hanging racks are your best option as it eliminates the use of floor space for more room to move in your shed.

5. Upcycled storage boxes

Maybe you have old coolers or water jugs that are no longer used. You might still have chests that used to hold toys still lying around. Use them to store the variety of items in your shed to help keep them out of the way.

6. Magnetic strips

A great way to store tools in your shed is by adding magnetic strips to your wall. This helps keep your essentials accessible and easy to find anytime in case of an emergency repair.

7. Wooden tool rack

If you’re interested in a sturdy and more spacious alternative to a simple magnetic strip, you may want to look into a wooden tool rack. If you’re keen, it’s easy to DIY, or you can have it custom-built based on your needs.

8. Wall hangers

Another way to organise various tools, like shovels, hard hats, and repair equipment, is by installing wall hangers or hooks. There’s no limit to what you can put up.

9. Plastic crates

If you want your shed storage to look nice and uniform, sourcing some matching storage units is a great idea. Plastic crates are an inexpensive, lightweight, and durable material that you can stack together for a neat look.

10. Organised racks

You don’t have to spend too much on shelving systems to organise your shed. Installing simple wire racks with designated trays can go a long way in keeping the space less cluttered.

11. Outdoor storage extension

Looking for extra storage for something like firewood? No need to clear out an already full shed; you can extend the storage space by adding a roofed shelving space to fit what you need.

12. Arrange by bulkiness

Bulky items can very easily obstruct space. The best way to store them is to ensure they’re securely tucked away at the topmost shelf.

13. Stacking storage

When you have long items like surfboards or slabs of wood, you can store them more efficiently with wall racks that lie horizontally. This helps avoid anyone tripping over them and makes them easier to reach.

14. Designated storage corners

When there are a lot of personal belongings you need to store in your shed, designating specific categories for each corner will help you locate things easily while also making the space feel more organised. Identify things like shoe storage, work tools, and seasonal materials.

15. Window planks

Want to put up hooks and hangers without damaging your shed’s walls? Add planks to your windows so you can install as many hooks as you need to store more items off the floor.

16. Workbench

Adding a workbench to your shed allows you space to lay out any tools or work on small projects in peace. You can also use drawers and shelves that come with it as extra storage for your essentials.

17. Gardening corner

If you have bigger gardening tools like rakes, brooms, and hoses, you can create a border in one section of your shed to keep them from falling all over the place.

18. Mini shed with built-in shelves

If you want to create a custom mini shed, opt for one with enough shelf space to accommodate as many items as possible.

19. Drawer organisers

When you have smaller items that need to be stowed away in drawers, small trays go a long way in helping keep your things sorted. This is especially helpful for small things like nuts and bolts, repair supplies, and tools.

20. Custom tool rack

For a more personalised workspace in your shed, you can install fittings specifically for the tools you work with often.

Sheds can be used in many different ways. Hopefully, you’ve found useful shed storage ideas to incorporate however you prefer to utilise the space.
