By following these steps to prepping a nursery, you can make the space a relaxing environment for you and your family.

Welcoming a new addition to your family is an exciting, adventurous, and joyous time. While your to-do list is growing by the minute, one of the most heartwarming tasks on your list is prepping your nursery. Theme aside, when designing this space, it must be a functional but calming environment for you and your little one to thrive.

Whether this is your first, second, or third child, work through this list for the steps needed to create a perfect nursery. And if you become in over your head at any point, you can seek help for each phase of the project.

Here are five simple steps to creating a functional and stylish nursery:

Step 1: Plan the space well

Before you choose between a wild animal or night sky theme, take some time to plan what you need in the space. Measure the space and visualize where things will be.

Choose an area where your kids will enjoy tummy time or independent play and, most importantly, how storage might be incorporated into the room.

Mapping these out will help you consider the look you want for your nursery – whether it’s straight out of a storybook or if you’re going for a modern, sleek aesthetic.

Cramped for space? Consider consulting a home organization specialist for creative ways to maximize the space.

Step 2: Pick a good color scheme

While your space is clear of furniture, it’s time to think of colors. This is when you choose your design and think of the tone you want to set for this space. Is it pastels or bright colors? An accent wall or neutral grays?

Consider things like the light in the room and the amount of wall space you’re working with, and don’t be afraid to call in the pros. You can work with a painting expert if you’re having trouble with color selection.

Step 3: Complete your furniture essentials

When prepping a nursery, pick functional furniture pieces. Do you see yourself with a standard crib, or is your eye for design calling your name? A baby changing table is a versatile piece of furniture, as it could include cubbies or drawers for the storage you need.

Maximize your space while considering your book, toy, and clothing storage essentials. If furniture assembly is not your thing, a Tasker can set up the crib for you

Step 4: Prioritize soft bedding and decor

This is where you can let the design theme shine or make those walls stand out! Want a pop of color on the rug? Accent or contrast those walls with what you choose.

Curtains and blinds control the room’s light and can complement your theme. Bedding, blankets, and pillows are definitely a way to tie together a theme and provide the softest environment for your little one.

Wall decor and mobiles are the ultimate places where your theme should shine and show off just what you’d like the room to be.

Need help with style? A professional home decorator can choose just the right pieces for your nursery.

Step 5: Ensure safety and flexibility

This is the time to ensure all items in your nursery are safe for your baby. Look for any loose cords or fragile items and see if they are secure. If your blinds have strings, check if they are tied high and out of reach.

Cover all wall outlets and secure any furniture to the walls. Need any assistance? A handy babyproofer can help you out. Assess your space and how it will be used, but be open to change if anything needs to be moved around to create a usable space.

Remember, this is an exciting time in your life, so if the process becomes overwhelming, posting a task for some extra hands can help you clear your nursery to-do list. Good luck!
