What is this woman with an Engineering scholarship doing on Airtasker?

Jemimah loves being outside completing gardening tasks and using her hands to earn money but what is most inspiring is her amazing academic background. Not only has she completed Bachelor of Science but she’s currently completing her Masters in Engineering Science and is a recipient of the Australian Awards scholarship.

Jemimah has had an amazing journey since moving to Australia from PNG when she was 13 years old, so let’s take a look at more of her Airtasker adventure.

So why Airtasker?

“I actually started out on Airtasker by posting tasks, which I guess is a bit different from other Taskers. It means that I can understand the Posters more because I’ve been on both sides.

I starting completing tasks thought because even though I’m studying full-time completing my Masters, sometimes I need a bit of extra money and I can’t commit to a part-time job because my studies are my main priority. With Airtasker I can pick and choose when I want to work and what works for me. This means that I’m usually completing tasks on weekends and afternoons.

I’m on a scholarship so whilst I have my studying costs covered, I still need to earn money for my extra-curricular activities. I’m also saving for a holiday soon.

Another thing I love about Airtasker is that the tasks I do give me a break from studying and I can reset my mind a little. I think that changing up my days is really important for me to excel in my studies.

What do you specialise in?

I like to complete a variety of tasks but I definitely excel in:

• Gardening – Weed removal, hedging, mowing the lawn, replanting and mulching.
• General cleaning – kitchens, bathrooms, vacuuming, windows and office cleaning.

Do you have any helpful gardening tips or favourite products you use?

If you’re completing a gardening task and it involves mulching, you need to make sure that all the weeds and leaves are removed properly beforehand. Also, it helps if you can distinguish between weeds and plants, sometimes they can look a bit similar.

The most requested gardening item is to pull out all of the weeds from in between pavers and bricks. It can take a while but you need to make sure you get all of the root, not just the top leaves. It looks great once it’s done!

Don’t forget your gloves, you want to make sure that your hands remain in good condition when you’re using them for gardening.

Can you tell us what your most memorable tasks are?

I remember that one time I helped a lady organise and pack lots of vintage items and I loved looking at all the different things she had. It was my first task experience with packing and arranging – I would definitely do more of these tasks.

I also find gardening tasks really fulfilling as you can clearly see your finished work. I’ve picked up so many new skills too. For instance, I’d never heard of mulching before the with black garbage bags and wood chips, so it was cool to learn about something new.

What is important to you when completing tasks?

Before I even make an offer on a task I like to know whether they have the equipment needed (especially for gardening tasks), location as I use public transport, size of the garden and photos. Having a picture of the task required helps to know what my offer should be so that it’s fair for both the parties.

I always try to be on time which when only using public transport can make a little difficult, but I find as long as you communicate with the Poster regularly they are very understanding.

I don’t like leaving tasks until I know that the Posters are satisfied with what I’ve done, I need to see that they’re happy. And I guess that’s why I’m very detailed from the very beginning when I make an offer and throughout the whole process.

Do you have any tips for others starting out on Airtasker?

I have a few tips that I’m happy to share with new Taskers:

• Read the task carefully and listen to the Poster so that you can complete a task to their satisfaction.
• Set expectations of what you can get done in the amount of time you have.
• Be on time and communicate if you’re running late.
• Get Badges on your profile because Posters will ask for them. Identity badges are a great place to start.

One last thing about me…

I really love sport. I used to play rugby union, that was up until I lost a tooth. I nearly made it to a professional team but I didn’t really want to play sports and dedicate too much of my time for it – it’s very intense.

In saying that, I currently do Jiujitsu and I’m enjoying it a lot.”
