How to declutter and organise your home

So you may have declared after a few glasses of bubbles on NYE that 2023 will be different. This year you’ll be career focused, watch the sunrise, eat healthily, and lose weight.

The problem with New Year’s resolutions is that they are hard to stick to, and most fail to keep them. However, having a clear mind and having your life in order allows you to achieve those goals better.

Getting organised in your life and career is a great way to start a new year, and decluttering your home is the perfect starting point.

After Christmas, it’s easy to accumulate more than we need, making your home untidy. The good news is that it’s not hard to do, and once you’ve got a rhythm, it’s easy to maintain.

Let’s do this!

Set 15 minutes aside every day

If a big home clean-out feels too daunting (and fair enough if it’s been a while), break up your tasks into chunks.

Pick a day or a time every day to do something small to improve your home, such as cleaning out the fridge or re-organising your wardrobe.

Only fifteen minutes. That’s less painful, right?

Toss, sell or donate, keep

You get three categories: toss, sell or donate, and keep. Be ruthless.

Remember the silver lining – there are things in there that you can make money from. And if not make money, make somebody’s life much better.

Use the Twelve Months Rule

When doubting whether you should keep something, ask, “Have I used this in the last twelve months?”

If the answer is no, and there’s no sentimental value, seriously consider curb-siding it.

The same truth applies to clothes, especially if you no longer fit into them. On the plus side, this makes room for more clothes, which leads us to…

The pod wardrobe

A pod wardrobe is a minimalist approach to fashion. A woman, for example, depending on her situation, may get by each season with a black dress, black pants, blue jeans, a white shirt, a denim jacket, and so forth.

There are variations on this, dependent on lifestyle, but it limits the number of clothes one may possess at any given time. It also saves time getting dressed.

Try fun ways to store stuff

Decluttering isn’t just about throwing things away – it’s about making room. Part of this involves finding a new spot for the things you’re keeping.

Storage can be decorative, not just functional. Have fun scouring op shops for decorative bowls to store jewellery or stationery. You can also utilise mason jars with home-printed labels in your kitchen.

We hope these tips for decluttering and organising your home will help you tick off those resolutions and achieve more this year. Good luck!
