What does an auto electrician do?

Warning lights on your dash or flickering headlights may indicate an electrical issue, or perhaps your car just won’t start. Fortunately, many auto electrical businesses offer a mobile service to ensure you’re not left stranded on the side of the road if something unexpected happens.

Here are some common issues that an auto electrician can help with:

Engine electrics and brakes

It’s important to act on any warning lights on your dash, especially your anti-lock braking system (ABS) to fix any issues before they become unsafe. Firstly, your auto technician will use a diagnostics machine to review the health of your battery, alternator, and starter motor.

A flat battery can be the cause of many electrical issues but fortunately, they’re easily replaced. However, if your battery isn’t holding charge, your auto technician will consider whether the alternator (which charges the battery when the car is running) is working. The starter motor may be the problem if your car won’t start, and this can either be repaired or replaced. An auto electrician can complete checks on fuel pumps and your electronic fuel injection (EFI) system to repair or improve your car’s engine.

Car electrics

Having trouble with auto electrics such as central locking, cruise control, windscreen wipers, power windows and mirrors? Your auto technician will check for blown fuses or short circuits to isolate and fix the problem.

Lighting systems

Functioning lighting systems are required for safety and legal reasons, so it’s important to have any issues fixed quickly. Lighting issues are often associated with the battery and alternator

Car security systems

Keep your vehicle safe and secure with a car alarm and immobiliser installed by a qualified auto electrician. An alarm acts as a deterrent to car thieves and an immobiliser ensures the engine won’t start if entry is gained to the vehicle. Plus, installing a dash cam and reversing camera is another smart safety and security measure.

Emergency roadside assistance

If you find yourself stranded with a car that won’t start, a mobile automotive electrician near you can help you get back on the road sooner. Their vehicle is fully-equipped with the necessary tools to diagnose the problem, so they can repair many issues on the spot. For any complex problems, you’ll need to arrange a tow truck to take your vehicle to a safe location for further work.

Car Battery Draining Overnight needs fixing

£70

Lowfield, South Yorkshire

17th Apr 2023

Isues with my car starting for about 6 weeks, and it's a new battery, had it fitted in October last year. Not sure if it's a mechanical issue, but seems more likely to be an electrical issue. The car wouldn't start intermittently, often then after a few attempts it would start. On occasions when it didn't, I called AA out twice, and they've simply jump started it, and it starts immediately, and appears to start working fine for a short while. First AA guy said he thinks it might be the fuel rail pressure sensor. 2nd AA guy, said something completely different, he said may be a faulty battery. However, the battery now appears to completely drain over night, and is no longer starting, or lasting if jump started. The mechanical garage I normally go to, mentioned that it sounds like an electrical fault, and may be the relay/fuse, or something simple, but he's not experienced with electrical issues. So far multiple different errors have appeared, and change intermittently. I've seen the following over the last few weeks, when trying to start the car, (note: that they don't remain on) 1. Without changing gear consult workshop 2. Inoperative see owners manual (ABS icon displayed) 3. Currently unavailable see owners manual (ABS icon displayed) 4. There was one about parking break inoperative, but don't recall actual message displayed. I have seen different ODE codes too, as follows 1. P0562 (most recent, using an old ODE reader) 2. 1st AA guy: 11 March: PO19024 (Supply Voltage too low), checkes battery said it was fine, but something is draining it 3. 2nd AA guy: 10 April: UO40100 (Power supply low, however he reported error not plausible, checked alternator and said it's working well) I wonder if it is a simple parasitic draw? I am a carer for my mum, and she has appointments towards the end of the week, anyone familiar with this issue, and able to fix it? - Due date: Needs to be done on Wednesday, 19 April 2023
