My husbands iPhone 6s had a broken screen and it went into meltdown and set a pass code. The phone previously didn't have a pass code so now we can't get in to the phone.

Hey,
I have done this numerous times before for my family members. This can be done as long as you have the password to the iTunes account that was used on the phone. Also unless you have a backup, you will lose all the data on the phone.

Thanks

Hello, I have previously worked for Apple care, happy to help. May I ask if he has backed up his iPhone recently?

Turn it off, press and hold power and home buttons at the same time, then when you see the apple logo release power while still holding home until iTunes logo comes up then plug into iTunes and recover it - different to restore, doesn't wipe it.
Ellie do you want to keep/recover the data?
If not. It's a DFU. I can help you with that.

Yes I want to try and retain the data
just go to itunes and restore iphone. Usually the thing backs up automatically. then restore back once it's restored. You use this feature when you get a new iphone and sell the old one...
