Fix my flakey internet connection

Posted by Steve B.

I have recently upgraded my wireless router at home (SOHO) and now I have weirdly intermittent connectivity to the net. This is mostly Apple equipment and I have done the basic checks myself (adsl2+ modem is connected to the net, the wireless network is on and active, etc.).

I need someone with very good configuration/resolution skills. I am working till 5 pm today but can be called after that or anytime tomorrow (Wednesday - ANZAC day). My equipment is:

- netcomm adsl2+ modem/router connected to iinet via a telstra landline
- latest version of time capsule (that's the new element in the configuration)
- a second airport to extend the wifi across all of the house
- Macs, iPhones and iPads that connect mostly via WiFi but a couple are also connected directly to the netcomm router via ethernet.

Symptoms are:

- WIFI looks good and I can see the other local devices
- Sometimes I can connect to the net, things look fine and the airport utility shows me the modem is connected to iinet.
- Other time the airport utility shows me the modem is not connected and yet when I use ethernet to connect directly to the modem I am online.
- At other times the ethernet connected devices are offline and yet the WiFi is working and connected to the net.

Thanks for the tip Matt B. I will check that out today. Much appreciated
Sounds like the wireless channel may be the problem. Possibly cross interference from other nearby wifi networks or other devices. I'd say try changing it to something else. That's for free.

Glenn and David, happy to go with either of you. Make a bid and I will accept in 1 hour. Thanks

Did this with iinet a couple of months ago when there was noise on the line. I'm not home at the moment but believe the filter is off the line.
I would be only able to provide phone support and perhaps remote assistance. I used to work at an Internet provider as Level 2/3 support and a Network Solutions Architect.
