Just a heads-up, I'm pretty sure this can be done for free if you take it to the Apple Store and book a Genius Bar appointment! (Please don't accept my offer, I just wanted to send you a message to save you money)

There is a marginal gain in performance for the iMac if you choose to upgrade it to Solid State Drives (SSD) and add more RAM, as it will be bottlenecked by the central processing unit (CPU) which cannot be upgraded (easily) thanks to Apple.
With the MacBook, if it is relatively new you can see vast improvement in speed and response by installing a fresh copy of the latest OSX (Sierra) but if it is really old the same story as above will apply.
You can bring those to Apple Store but the 1st thing they will do is trying to sell you a new product and convince you to let go of the half eaten apple.
