Most newborn photography sessions happen either in a permanent studio, or in a temporary studio environment within your home. Here are the steps involved:

Prep

Your photography professional will start by confirming with you the type of photos you’d like taken. Then they’ll prep space using props, lighting, and backdrops to get it ready for your baby. If your baby needs to change into a special outfit for the photo, you’ll need to do this then. Your baby’s photographer also give you some tips to help calm your baby, like rocking them, feeding them, and getting them to sleep before the session starts.

Pose and shoot

Posed newborn photos are best taken while your newborn is under two weeks old because they’re sleepy and still have that fresh-from-the-womb look. Your photographer will direct you to position your baby on their props, using pillows and blankets to keep your little one comfortable. They’ll snap plenty of photos from different angles, and will adjust the lighting as needed.

Take lifestyle photos

Usually, by this point, the baby has woken up a little, so it’s the perfect time for some newborn lifestyle photos. Mum, dad, any siblings, and even pets can get in on the action. Your newborn photography expert will instruct you to pose or simply capture you in your natural environment - looking after the baby, feeding the baby, having cuddles, and settling into life as a family of 3, 4, 5, or more!

Editing

After they’ve packed everything up, your photographer will head back to their studio to edit the photos. They’ll hone in on the best photos from the shoot and crop, retouch, and balance the images. Once the photos are edited, they’ll provide you with the images via USB or email.
