What does a mechanic service usually include?

Mechanics are skilled in nearly all aspects of keeping your car maintained, serviced, and repaired, so it’s roadworthy and efficient to run. The exact process during your service will depend on how your mechanic prefers to work and the type of tasks they’re doing, like:

Minor service

This is the most basic engine service a mechanic provides, but it can make a huge difference in whether or not your car can operate efficiently. A minor service usually alternates with a major service, at around the 6-month mark. A mechanic near you can do minor services because your mechanic only needs a flat service to get the job done. They’ll unscrew the sump plug, allowing old oil to drain from your car. Then they’ll remove the old oil filter and replace with a new one that’s the right size for your vehicle. Your mechanic will dispose of your old filter and oil. They’ll also inspect other key components, like your battery, lights, air filters, and other fluids.

Log book servicing / major service

A major service or log book service involves a series of steps in line with your vehicle manufacturer’s service manual. It’ll include a combination of major and minor services, depending on the age of your car, or how many kilometres it’s travelled. Your service may include testing your lights, brakes, and battery. Then checking fluid levels, windscreen wipers, windows, mirrors, steering, suspension, radiator, fan belts, and tyre pressure. Finally, it may also include maintaining/replacing oil filters, hoses, belts, tyres, and wheel alignment. Your mechanic will finish off by stamping your logbook to record the services completed, which can help maintain your car’s resale value.

Roadworthy certificate or pink slip

A roadworthy certificate or pink slip is a specific vehicle check that’s conducted to ensure your car is in a roadworthy condition and can be operated safely. In some states, it’s required when selling a car or may be required each year to confirm your vehicle is safe for registration purposes. A mechanic will check off a list of predetermined items to verify that your car meets a minimum safety standard set out by your state government. They’ll focus on safety, checking things like tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, rust or damage, seatbelts, windows, lights, and your windscreen.

Major and minor repairs

Sometimes your car might need a little extra attention if you’ve had an accident, broken down, or your drive feels a bit different to normal. A car mechanic can perform minor and major repairs on most vehicles. They’ll use diagnostic equipment to locate the issue and decide on a course of action to get your car back on the road. If they don’t have the necessary spare parts, they may need to order them to finish off your repair and replace any faulty parts. Note that a mechanic service is usually limited to your car’s engine and electrics. It’s best to speak to a panel beater if you also have external body damage.

Trailer mechanical work

$380

Mount Perry QLD, Australia

17th Aug 2022

Looking for quotes for 4 bearings changed and drum brakes installed on one axle of a small dual axle boat trailer. Coupling and bundy hose and welding coupling plate and brake backing plate bolt plate to axle will most probably be required. Present coupling plate may just need some drill holes instead of welding new plate? the boat loaded is heavy so work will probably be easiest to leave boat on trailer, Boat is a project so cold be jacked and blocked up higher for access. No need to worry about scratching, as boat is going to be finished at later stage Bearings and Hydraulic full drum brake kit including weld plates needs to be collected from Gin Gin (ordered and sitting at a depot at present). 14 inch Holden mag wheels previous owner installed wrong bearings which are loose., trailer wasnt driven since wrong install, so stubs are OK Boat and trailer are out in the open under a huge tree, so plenty of access to work on it. Sort of hoping to have work done by September, but flexible - Due date: Flexible
