How does your garage look? Messier than it should or perhaps you can’t even get a look because there’s so much stuff piled up. If any of these apply to you (go on, admit they do!), then we’ve got some handy tips on how to organise your garage and make it a room you’re not dreading to venture into.

Converting your garage into a workable, efficient space isn’t a one-day job. It requires careful planning and some brainpower to figure out what is right for your space. You’ll need to think about how big is your space? Are your walls already crammed and need re-sorting?

Once you’ve answered all these questions, you can start to consider the best ways to organise your things. A key element in your plan should be shelving. There are many options to choose from when it comes to garage shelving systems be it metal shelving, wire shelving, wall shelving, cube shelves, custom-made shelving systems, storage racks and the list goes on and on.

The best way to organise your garage is by shelving

We’ve collected some shelving ideas from some of the best garages builds we’ve seen to get your creative juices flowing.

1. Metal, wire & mounted shelving

This shelving system combines metal mounted shelves with a series of adjustable racks to enable you to custom fit it into your space. Take note of all the different sizes of tubs and bins to help you tuck away those little bits and pieces usually kept lying around. It’s a great way to organise your garage for any space.

The next two wire shelving systems utilise the full space of the wall. You can add storage bins or wire baskets to hold items and also store longer pieces of sporting equipment or tools.

2. Industrial shelving

These industrial shelving systems are fairly stock standard in many garages but that’s because they’re so versatile. You can add or take away according to how much room you have – or don’t have!

Here’s an innovative yet simple way to upcycle and bring some ‘industrial chic’ to the table, using PVC pipe to store garden tools. Not to mention it’s a budget-friendly method too.

3. Cube shelves

Cube shelves can be deceiving as they don’t appear to hold much. But you’d be surprised how much you can pack into them if you use a variety of baskets or bins. It also works if you have a lot of things and it would look messy to put on open shelves or perhaps you can organise them into certain boxes.

4. Storage racks

Make sure you consider all the spaces within your garage, including the ceiling. This innovative storage rack system enables you to tuck away all those bits and pieces you don’t use all that often but still need access for that ‘rainy day’.

Being able to move your storage rack is a huge advantage. Fill these tubs with all your bits and bobs such as screws and nails to create an uncluttered, streamlined look.
