What does landscaping include?
When you book your landscaper, it’s important to let them know in your task exactly what work you need to be done - from simple maintenance services to a complex landscape design for your outdoors. That way, they’ll be able to make you a fair offer and bring along the right tools for the job.
Not sure where to start? If you need a range of general landscaping services, grab a notepad and pen, then go for a wander outside. Make a note of anything that needs tidying up, trimming, or removing. Then make sure you include these tasks in your listing.
Another way to think about your landscaping is to break it down by the type of specialised skill or service you need, such as installing a water feature or irrigation system, designing garden beds, or planning the landscape of your pool area. Here are some of the jobs you might give to your landscaper and what you can expect to happen during the process.
Planning
When you’re undertaking a BIG change, it’s important to lay the groundwork with some planning first. A garden designer will help come up with ideas and map everything out on paper before you get started on your garden space makeover. Or you might hire a landscape architect to plan a larger commercial landscaping project in your local community or public outdoor space.
Earth and rocks
Don’t break your back over your backyard landscaping - no matter how little or how much you need to do. You can hire earthmoving contractors to do your trench digging, levelling, and even your pool excavation or boring excavation. They’ll bring the all tools and equipment needed to dig and move the earth so you (literally) don’t have to get your hands dirty.
Gardens
Planning a nice new garden bed to grow your own veggies, flower beds, shady trees, or just want to reduce the amount of ground you have to mow in your yard? Get some help with your garden landscaping and garden edging to get the project off your to-do list and done sooner. That way, you can get on with the fun bit in landscaping - planting!
Water
Where there are plants, there’s water. Make sure your plants get water when they need it (without having to remember to hose) with a drip irrigation system or a sprinkler system installation. Or make your garden more beautiful with a garden pond or water features. Either way, getting your water systems sorted is so much quicker and easier with an extra pair of hands or a landscaper near you who knows what they’re doing.
Trees
Trees are wonderful things, but sometimes, a tree’s gotta go. If you’re not experienced, you should never do chainsawing, stump grinding, wood chipping and mulching, or land clearing yourself. That’s something you should leave up to an experienced landscaper with the right equipment and background to get the job done properly and safely.
Building and installations
A big component of landscaping is installing things to make your space more functional and beautiful. Things like retaining walls, artificial grass installation, landscape lighting, or even garden benches to sit on. It’s always best to get a landscaper to help when it involves heavy lifting or specialist equipment. Garden landscapers can help you get your installations done safely and help you start enjoying your space much sooner.

Basic landscaping
$1,200
Bondi NSW 2026, Australia
27th Sep 2023
We moved into a new house and the previous owners used some crappy dirt that has glass and tile shards through it. You can't see it in the photos but I think they got the dirt from a construction site or something. Basically: we need to remove all that dirt and replace it with better stuff. I'm keen for advice but what I'm roughly thinking we need to do is: 1. Remove the crappy dirt. It's probably 6m long and 2m wide, and maybe 30cm deep I reckon. There are also some concrete bricks that currently section off the garden. This will all need to be dumped somewhere, probably a tip. 2. Replace most of that area with dirt that's good enough for turf (pic 1), and about 2m x 1m with dirt that's good enough for a little garden (pic 2). 3. Lay turf over where the current dirt patch is 4. Add a little garden off to the side - keen for recommendations on what to put there to make it look nice 5. Mow the lawn 6. Weed the garden a bunch of dirt replaced, then turf laid, and a little garden I've included a price that I hope is fair, but am happy to negotiate based on the effort you think it'll take! - Due date: Flexible
Daniel was lovely to work with and came up with some creative improvements to our basic landscaping needs that saved lots of money. Things were a bit delayed because it's such a busy time of year, but I'd still recommend Daniel and will work with him again!
