Top Cat Door Installation related questions

First, mark the door’s position. Then, drill around the corners. Finally, cut out the hole using a saw and attach the cat door. If you don’t have a self-framing door, you can use four pieces of wooden plank and fix them inside the hole to create a frame for the door. If you want the cat flap without the hassle of DIY or a cat panel for your sliding glass door, get in touch with a Tasker instead.

Relatively easy, yes! Especially if you’ve got one of those self-framing doors, and you plan to install it in a typical wooden door. But why go through the hassle of figuring it out yourself (and cutting a wonky hole in your door) when you can get an expert cat flap fitter? Start looking for an installer near you right here on Airtasker.

It depends on the kind of door you have and the cat door options available in your area. Some door panels fit into sliding glass doors, for example. If you aren’t sold on the choices you see online, it may be better to consult a Tasker regarding your cat door needs. They can also give tips on using your cat door, such as locking it during rush hour if you live on a busy street.

Start by marking where you want the cat flap to be. Then, drill through the corners, keeping the drill horizontal. Drill the screw holes marked on the cat flap. Next, insert a jigsaw with a steel-cutting blade into one of the corner holes. Cut on the outline, then insert the exterior half of the pet door. Match the thickness of both doors, then fasten the flap. Lastly, apply caulk around the edge of the cat door.

It depends on the Tasker you hire - some may only offer cat door installation. If you need other services like pet sitting, you can post a separate request to look for local pet sitters to watch over your furry or feathered friend.

Some cat door installers may be able to repair your door. You can try requesting a cat door installer who also does door repair - there may be experts right in your neighborhood! Or, you can make a new task post and look for door repair handypersons in your area.

What do cat door installation services include?

Cat door installation services include preparing your door, fitting the cat flap, and working with all kinds of cat doors. When you book a Tasker to fit a cat flap, you can expect them to bring the necessary materials for the job. Some may even assist in buying the correct type of cat door for your needs.

Here’s what to expect when you request a cat door installation service through Airtasker.

Measuring the cat door size and position

You can do this yourself or have the Tasker check to be doubly sure. First, they’ll measure the tallest and widest parts of your pet’s body. Then, they’ll pick out a cat door that’s at least 5 centimeters higher and wider than your cat. You can pick out the cat door yourself or ask the Tasker to do this.

Once you have the cat door or flap, it’s time to mark its position on the door. This is usually 7 to 8 cm above the bottom of the door. The Tasker will then trace the template and mark where the screws will be placed. Sometimes, the Tasker will put an “X” mark on the corners of the outline.

Drilling and cutting the cat flap

After the cat door position is marked, the Tasker will usually drill the corners for the exterior door mount and its screws. Then, they’ll usually cut along the outline with a jigsaw.

Installing the cat door

Finally, it’s time to put up the cat door! The Tasker first puts the exterior door frame against the exterior of your door, then puts the interior door frame (the side with the flap) on the interior side. They’ll screw the pieces in and ta-da! Your kitty can now enjoy their new cat flap.

Installing different kinds of cat doors and flaps

Got a special kind of entry point (or even a window or wall) that you want to put a cat door in? Some Taskers can help you find just the right kind for you and your pet’s needs. There are cat flaps that fit into sliding glass doors, ones that can be used on windows and porches, even high-tech ones that “screen” your pet’s collar and help keep rodents or other wildlife out of your home!

Some types are designed to be exterior cat doors, while others are great for interior use. Tell your Tasker the kind of cat door you need, and they’ll do their best to find one that fits the bill.
