Skirting board materials and tools
Just like with any other construction job, you’ll need materials and tools. Your tradesman takes care of buying the skirting boards, depending on what you specified in the task post in terms of length and height. In case you don’t have anything in mind yet, they may stop by your location first, do a bit of measuring, then go to your local hardware.
They also arrive with the necessary tools in tow. These include a coping saw, ear muffs, safety glasses, a nail gun, a tape measure, and a hammer. If you already have some of these materials at home, you could ask your tradesman to bring only the ones that aren’t in your toolbox. It all depends on your preference and what your skirting board service requires.
Fitting or installing skirting boards
Your tradesman begins by measuring each part of the wall and marking the skirting boards. They’ll cut the boards at 45-degree angles, then cut the scribed joint. The scribed joint makes sure that the boards line up nicely at the corners of the room.
Then, they cut the skirting board at 90-degree angles on both ends and start attaching it to the wall. They’ll take the board with the scribed joint, cut it to size, then push it against this first skirting board. Once they’re happy with the fit, your tradesman attaches it to the first board.
After that, it’s pretty much the same process all around the room - or every room in your house.
Redoing skirting boards
Skirting boards protect your wall from wear and tear, so you’ll inevitably have to redo them after years of living in your home. This process is pretty much the same as installation, except that your tradesman has to remove the current skirting boards first. This involves removing any cables or obstructions, breaking the plaster, removing the skirting boards, and getting rid of nails and screws. It’s a rather tedious process, so it’ll take longer and possibly cost more compared to starting in a bare room.
Working with skirting boards can get pretty messy, so it’s advisable to get after-builders cleaning to tidy up your house afterwards. Don’t tire yourself picking up after your handymen or construction workers - get cleaning experts to do it instead!

Have installed PVC white skirting boards my self throughout my house , just need help with one step in a split level house that is not 45 degrees , prob a 5 minute job for an experienced person to cut the skirting boards to fit (that’s it cut them correctly and yr work is done, I will do affixing and final no gaps and clean up myself ) I have mitre saw and other tools on site . Painting was messy as there was skirting paint on the wall. He wiped paint off the skirting while wiping paint off the floor and did not fix the painting. Also managed to chip paint off our newly painted walls. He said this is the job you get for this price. Very unimpressed with the work and very upset with that remark as it was a price that he came up with and agreed upon.

Budget is just for reference only, please advise your install price. • I have already purchased the skirting boards from Bunnings, they are primed MDF in 2.7 meter lengths (pencil round). 24 metres. • two small bedrooms, skirts will not be going against each wall/surface. • existing carpet and underlay has been pulled back, and the existing wooden nail tracks removed. • existing carpet will be relaid. • i’d prefer this completed before Christmas, ideally. • this is a renovation, not a new build • job does not include filling or painting
