Skirting board materials and tools
Just like with any other construction job, you’ll need materials and tools. Your tradesman takes care of buying the skirting boards, depending on what you specified in the task post in terms of length and height. In case you don’t have anything in mind yet, they may stop by your location first, do a bit of measuring, then go to your local hardware.
They also arrive with the necessary tools in tow. These include a coping saw, ear muffs, safety glasses, a nail gun, a tape measure, and a hammer. If you already have some of these materials at home, you could ask your tradesman to bring only the ones that aren’t in your toolbox. It all depends on your preference and what your skirting board service requires.
Fitting or installing skirting boards
Your tradesman begins by measuring each part of the wall and marking the skirting boards. They’ll cut the boards at 45-degree angles, then cut the scribed joint. The scribed joint makes sure that the boards line up nicely at the corners of the room.
Then, they cut the skirting board at 90-degree angles on both ends and start attaching it to the wall. They’ll take the board with the scribed joint, cut it to size, then push it against this first skirting board. Once they’re happy with the fit, your tradesman attaches it to the first board.
After that, it’s pretty much the same process all around the room - or every room in your house.
Redoing skirting boards
Skirting boards protect your wall from wear and tear, so you’ll inevitably have to redo them after years of living in your home. This process is pretty much the same as installation, except that your tradesman has to remove the current skirting boards first. This involves removing any cables or obstructions, breaking the plaster, removing the skirting boards, and getting rid of nails and screws. It’s a rather tedious process, so it’ll take longer and possibly cost more compared to starting in a bare room.
Working with skirting boards can get pretty messy, so it’s advisable to get after-builders cleaning to tidy up your house afterwards. Don’t tire yourself picking up after your handymen or construction workers - get cleaning experts to do it instead!

I need skirting boards installed in entrance / laundry areas to cover gaps between floor and bottom of wall. Removed ceramic floor tiles and cement grouting to lay vinyl planking. Actual gap is about 3cm and surface is cement from where tiles were removed. Exposed cement is pretty even but may be a couple of small rough spots which need to be smoothed / removed to get skirting board flush against wall. Also need a couple of holes in tiles filled in in one wall before skirting board put in place. May be easier to use Polyfilla or similar rather than builders bog. Patches will be getting painted later. I have 3 * 2.7m lengths of rectangular white finished trim 66mm * 11mm. Total amount of skirting to be installed is approx. 6.5m. The skirting has 15 sections and 12 corners will be needed. See diagram. Bottom 3cm of skirting board will need to bond to exposed cement and the top 3cm will need to bond to painted wall. Any gaps between the skirting board joins and wall will need to be filled. You will need to provide all tools, filler for holes, adhesive to attach skirting board and white filler for joins and any gaps between the top of installed skirting board and wall. See photos and rough diagram Can also do Thursday 31 August if that works. - Due date: Needs to be done on Friday, 1 September 2023
